We have loved being a part of the Paden community. This year is no different. We were concerned when the former principal left the school right after the school year started that what we love about the school might disappear. The interim principal Mr Flores has made connections with us and other families. The staff is welcoming, the art docent program is amazing, they have a makers space and a library with inclusive books. This school is my only experience with public schools and I am happy to be a part of the Pelican community

I’m Jewish btw Encinal High School in Alameda, California, has some significant shortcomings that make it less than ideal for students seeking a quality education and enriching high school experience.### AcademicsWhile the school offers Advanced Placement (AP) courses, the overall academic rigor leaves much to be desired. Many students find the curriculum lacking in challenge, and some teachers struggle to effectively engage their students. There’s also a noticeable gap in academic support, with limited resources available for students who need extra help. This often results in a significant disparity in student performance and preparedness for college.### ExtracurricularsExtracurricular offerings at Encinal High are underwhelming. While there are clubs and sports teams available, many of them suffer from poor organization and lack of funding. The school’s athletic teams, once a source of pride, have seen a decline in performance, and the school spirit has dwindled as a result. The arts and other creative programs are often overlooked, leaving students with fewer opportunities to explore their interests.### Campus and FacilitiesThe campus itself is outdated and in need of significant repairs. The facilities are often inadequate, with classrooms and common areas that feel cramped and poorly maintained. The lack of investment in the school’s infrastructure is evident, and it impacts the overall atmosphere and safety of the campus.### Community and EnvironmentThe school’s sense of community has weakened over the years, with many students feeling disconnected and unsupported. Issues like bullying and a lack of inclusivity are not adequately addressed, contributing to a less welcoming environment. The administration’s response to student concerns is often slow and ineffective, leading to frustration among both students and parents.Overall, Encinal High School has a lot of room for improvement. From academic rigor to campus conditions, the school falls short in providing a well-rounded, positive high school experience.

Wood faces significant challenges with student behavior and administrative oversight, resulting in an unsafe and disruptive environment. A small group of students repeatedly engages in violent and disruptive behavior, including physical altercations in classrooms that have injured teachers and targeted female students. Specific incidents include boys filming themselves assaulting another student in the bathroom and ongoing issues with sexual harassment among students, which appear to go unaddressed.Disciplinary measures are inconsistent, as repeat offenders face minimal consequences, such as suspensions, allowing disruptive behavior to continue unchecked. The administration seems more focused on preventing incidents from being recorded on phones than addressing the underlying violence. Additionally, older students are permitted to enter and disrupt classes intended for younger students, further undermining the learning environment.While some dedicated teachers strive to focus on academics, others appear to prioritize personal or social agendas over education. With the school under construction and utilizing portable classrooms, monitoring students in a smaller space should be more manageable, yet oversight remains inadequate. The administration’s apparent leniency toward disruptive students, possibly due to their special needs, compromises the safety and education of well-behaved students who are there to learn.The school must prioritize student safety, consistent discipline, and academic focus to create a supportive and effective learning environment for all.
