Description

This light-filled 2 BR, 2 BA unit in Art Deco Woodley Park Towers retains the 1929 building’s charm (9’ ceilings, 6-over-6 windows, hardwood floors) and many original features (“Miracle Doors”, louvered doors (for airflow) plus the usual access doors, brass-and-glass doorknobs, etc.) Some of the Sellers’ many upgrades aren’t obvious (a new electric panel) while others are more visible (stripped/repainted doors and refinished hardware). Whenever something new was added, it was designed to blend with Unit 11’s age and style. ------ “WPT” has quick access to DC’s urban advantages with two nearby Metro stops and is within walking distance of both Cleveland and Woodley Parks’ restaurants, shops, and services (a Post Office, DC Branch Library, cleaners). It also overlooks the Klingle Valley and is linked by a short path to the bike and pedestrian trail that goes downhill to join Rock Creek Park’s extensive trails. ------ #11 gets the best of both worlds since it’s on WPT’s main floor and surrounded by nature. It feels more like a house than an apartment; from the Foyer, you see through an arch to the living room and, to one side, through French doors to the oversized Dining Room. Both have large windows framing the trees and gardens outside. The Kitchen was redesigned to make use of all available space and has abundant storage in custom-built cabinets that extend to the ceiling and are tucked into often ignored spots. Custom copper countertops provide plenty of work space (there’s room for more than one cook). The Bedrooms/Baths are down a hallway lined with 3 closets, all redone to increase their capacity. The Primary Bedroom’s ensuite Bath has a large walk-in shower while the Hall Bath has a shower- over- tub for traditionalists. ------ The floor plan is flexible. Cable runs to the Solarium and 2nd Bedroom, so the Solarium’s built-in desks, bookshelves, drawers and cabinets can be an office or reading/study space and the Bedroom works as a den or office, too. The Foyer, accented by a vintage fireplace mantle fitted with bookshelves, is big enough to hold an extra table for parties or for projects. The Primary Bedroom is spacious but filled with storage, featuring both a walk-in closet and custom-built floor-to-ceiling louvered cabinets that can be used for shelving or to hang clothes. ------ There are no steps between the street and WPT’s lobby/elevators . Unit #11, on the same floor, is especially convenient because it has no internal steps and is close to the only elevator that goes to the basement, where the Laundry Room, Fitness Center/Sauna, Community Room, and extra Storage Units are located. (It’s also near the adjacent stairway, so just one flight away from those amenities and a shortcut out to Connecticut Ave.)

"I’ve lived in the neighborhood for almost 24 years. I found it hard to meet people because my children never lived with us. We love to walk in the neighborhood and other nearby neighborhoods. Since we moved to a SFH, in 2010,we know more neighbors in the hood. "
  • Susanditto
"At the crossroads of everything Cleveland Park, Adams Morgan, and Dupont Circle have to offer; with its own restaurants and shops; plus a jogging/bike trail into Rock Creek Park; peaceful, tree-lined sidewalks; great public schools; neighbors of all ages and ethnicities; and easy walking distance to Metro, Circulator, and other bus routes; Woodley Park has everything one could want in urban living. I've lived here for almost 10 years, and while I'm always keeping an eye on the DC market, I've yet to find a neighborhood with more value for my money than right here. "
  • Shane S.
"I lived off Cortland PL for almost 5 years in a studio apartment with my (rather large) dog. Having a beautiful spur off Rock Creek park just out my back door made the small living space very liveable. I would take my dog out for walks in the park almost every night after dark, and never once felt concerned for my safety. There were almost always neighbors out doing the same. There is a real community feel to the neighborhood, and the mix of single-family homes, duplex/semi-detached homes, condos, and apartments gives the neighborhood a refreshing diversity. Yes, even the lower-end apartments aren't cheap by any means, but the disparity in incomes is still enough to maintain a good mix of people at different stages in their lives. On Friday evenings in the Fall it was common to find neighbors and the occasional passer-by sitting around the picnic tables in the park talking and enjoying a glass of wine -- usually provided by one or more of the folks in the million-dollar homes across the street -- or playing a game of boccee ball. You'd usually find 15 or so people out, always unplanned, and never exactly the same group. That made it very inviting -- it never felt like you were crashing someone else's party if you just showed up. It was really beautiful. The Cortland/Devonshire neighborhood is just far enough off Connecticut avenue to give it a very peaceful feel, and a nice separation from the crowds headed to the zoo on the weekends. It's not right in the heart of entertainment/nightlife central, but it is just a ten minute walk away. I gave it three stars in that category, but I see the separation as a good thing. (You really are 10 minutes from the Uptown Theater, the Smithsonian Zoo, and a great selection of restaurants, most with outdoor seating to be enjoyed 9 months out of the year. The clubs and bars of Adams Morgan are about a 15 minute walk away, just over the Duke Ellington bridge. In a word or so: beautiful, friendly, community, peaceful, fun"
