More about Smith Flat here:

Smith Flat was a well known and historically important stop on the Carson Trail during the early wild West pioneer days of wagon trains and stage coaches. Near here was structure responsible for collecting a toll from the adventurous souls traveling this main Trail over the Sierras. Smith Flat marks the beginning of a steep rise to the Sierra Nevada mountains and Echo Summit which overlooks the Lake Tahoe Basin. For this reason, we call 2161 Smith Flat the Toll House.
Today Smith Flat residents are increasing surrounding hills of grape vines. The former Blue Lead mine with an opening in the Smith Flat House and a tunnel that goes all the way to the South Fork of the American River provides the year-round headwaters to Hangtown Creek which flows next to Placervile's Main Street 3 miles further down the hill. The main parking lot for the El Dorado Trail which extends up the mountain to the snow line in Camino or all the way down to Shingle Springs is located here. The Placerville Airport is on the ridge across Highway 50 off our Exit # 49..

  • Sisqsquatch
"Placerville is a mixture of Sierra Foothills with bigger city amenities. It's a beautiful area and has a rich history connected to the Gold Rush in 1848. Plenty of recreational opportunities for all ages. "
  • Sisqsquatch
"Eskaton has great dog paths, it's a retirement community in Placerville and very quiet and friendly. For the most part people pick up their dog doo but occasionally you get a few bad apples. But that's anywhere I think. Overall, the community has a lot of different diverse walking paths with poop poles strategically placed. "
  • Rebecca K.
"Kind people. Everyone is respectful and quite polite at all times. Neighbors all seem to care about kids and how they grow up."
  • Sisqsquatch
"I love the various nature trails and the fact dogs are treated like parts of the family. It's a fairly friendly environment and the security makes things feel safe. "
  • Trinquinn
"Older community. Not a lot of children, yet there still are some families around :) everyone enjoys privacy "
  • Teresaannlacalle
"It’s a great place, as long as dogs are on a leash it should not be a problem. There is a lot of land and plenty of walking trails for dogs. The only negative thing I can think of as far as being a dog owner would be that they will be up all night...............they’re young!"
  • Gunladydfi
"Love the privacy and neighbors. It makes it hard to move away from this area. Plenty to do around the local area. Close to Lake Tahoe and Nevada in general. Lots of animals around. I can’t see my neighbors and the views from my backyard are to die for. "
  • Gunladydfi
"Love the quality of living in the Placerville. Plenty of activities to do in the area. Close to Lake Tahoe "

"My commute is short and uncomplicated aside from ongoing roadwork. I live in town close to the freeway and work in town as well. "
  • Nurseleah_04
"More kids are moving in thank goodness! Providence Christian school is the only school I can recommend!"
  • Stephanie
"This is a quiet neighborhood where you can trust your neighbors. They are friendly. People generally take care of their properties. We are close enough to town that we can walk to some local shops. "
