Neighborhood Description

A Brief History of Pines Lake.

In 1924 Mr. Harry Harris and his partners, Max Berger and John Ackerman, now all deceased, formed the Pines Lake Corporation and started to purchase parcels of land that would ultimately become the lake bottom. Construction of the dam started in May of 1927 and was completed in October. In May of 1928 water overflowed the spillway for the first time.
The lake is approximately 1 mile long and ½ mile wide. It covers 158 acres and has a shoreline of close to five miles. The primary source of water is Haycock Brook that originates east of Berdan Avenue, flows into Pancake Hollow (now Point) Reservoir, into Lionshead Lake and finally into Pines Lake. The Lake is 20 to 30 feet deep in the main channel. Natural springs and drainage from surrounding hills provide water to the lake.
Soon after the dam was completed home construction began. However, due to the Great Depression of the 30’s and the shortage of fuel and construction materials during World War II, only 150 homes had been built by 1944. Many of the homes were built using logs from a local sawmill.
The Pines Lake Association was formed to provide administrative services, recreational and social activities. Today there are approximately 770 homes within the defined geographical area of Pines Lake that are eligible for membership in the Pines Lake Association. Those of us who live at Pines Lake look upon it as an oasis surrounded by a growing township, which one-day may become a city.

"I drive using my car to get to work. There’s local train stations that can be used and they are within 10 min from my house. They also have a bus terminal fairly close too. "
  • Adam D.
"I'm part of the community in Wayne as just a college student, but there is a lot to love about the area. Much of Wayne's development runs through a valley, and atop the ridge that forms three sides of the valley. This means that, despite the Jersey aesthetics, it's a rather pretty place to live, and most of the single family homeowners around here treasure their property and maintain it as such."
  • Michael A.
"Holiday parades and 4th of July Celebrations. Farmer’s market on certain weekends. Car shows and Wayne Day!"
  • Danawig7
"Hard to say since I’m not a parent, other than the schools are great, there are tons of kids here and it’s a very family oriented place with lots of activities. "
  • Danawig7
"I live 15 minutes from my job compared to the 45+ minutes it used to take me when I lived in Jersey City. I work in Fairfield.I don’t work in the city anymore, but there are buses right outside the complex that go to the city so it is a very convenient place to live for city workers as well. After 20 years in New York and Jersey City, when was the exact change I needed. I love it here. I’ll never go back to living in a city after this."
  • Tarek S.
"This neighborhood is great place to live in although it’s expensive but if you can afford it it’s worth it"
  • Michelle D. M.
"I’ve lived here for over 20 years. Wonderful town. Could have more outdoor shopping areas for the locals. "
