My family’s experience with Richpond Elementary School has been deeply disappointing and concerning. Many teachers appear insufficiently trained and lack the professionalism that parents should be able to expect in an elementary school environment. Equally troubling is the broader school culture, which often feels neither inclusive nor equitable.Concerns extend beyond race. Families of color and families from lower-income backgrounds frequently seem to face unfair assumptions, disproportionate scrutiny, and harsher responses to even minor incidents. At the same time, the school environment can feel cliquish and socially stratified. Families with longstanding community ties—particularly those originally from Bowling Green or those connected to influential parent networks—often appear to receive noticeably warmer treatment, more patience, and more favorable responses from staff. This unevenness creates a sense of biased treatment that undermines trust and isolates families who do not fit into these circles.The front office staff and administration have also been consistently unresponsive and dismissive (The front office is particularly rude). Interactions with the principal reinforce the perception that student well-being, development, and fair treatment are not prioritized. Instead of fostering a supportive, engaging learning environment, the school emphasizes extreme control, silence, and compliance. Students are discouraged from talking, interacting, or expressing themselves, resulting in an atmosphere that feels rigid and suppressive rather than nurturing.A school should be a place where every child feels safe, valued, and encouraged to grow—regardless of their background, income, or community connections. Unfortunately, that has not been our experience at Richpond Elementary. My hope is that the school will reflect on these issues and take meaningful steps toward fostering a more respectful, inclusive, and student-centered environment.
