Very disappointed with my experience at Briargrove Elementary.The air conditioning in my child’s classroom has reportedly been out for approximately two weeks. I went to the school myself and experienced how hot it was. Staff were expressing that it was extremely hot, and students were visibly uncomfortable. As a parent, I was also extremely uncomfortable and had difficulty breathing because of the heat.I am also concerned about the lack of communication regarding my child’s classroom and the staff working directly with him. I was not properly introduced to his teacher or provided the information I expected at the beginning of the school year. When I requested access to ParentSquare, I was told it was not yet up and running.I also have concerns regarding Kendrin Jackson, whom I understand is an assistant principal but has been working directly with students, including my second-grade child. I have personally observed behavior and mannerisms that made me uncomfortable with him working directly with my 7-year-old. I am asking the school to clearly explain his official role, why he is working with my child, and what responsibilities he has in the classroom.I am not asking for anyone to be discriminated against. My concern is as a parent about who is working directly with my child, the classroom environment, appropriate boundaries, and being informed about my child’s education and supervision.When I raised my concerns with administration, I did not feel that they were taken seriously, and I was particularly concerned when my concerns were attributed to my home environment without evidence.Parents deserve transparency, communication, and the ability to raise concerns about their children without feeling dismissed.I hope HISD takes these concerns seriously, addresses the ongoing AC problem immediately, improves parent communication, and provides clear answers regarding staff roles and my child’s classroom environment.
