About this House
The Gift of Townhouse Living THE BLOCK Toward the end of the late 1880&s, East 80th Street between Fifth and Madison Avenues began a building wave that graced the block with outstanding mansions and in several remarkable instances superb homes were purchased or erected by parents for their families or as gifts for their children. Frank W. Woolworth bought lots at 4, 6 and 8 to build homes for each of his married daughters, engaging the illustrious architect C.P.H. Gilbert, wellknown for his French chateau recreations. Financier Paul Warburg replaced two narrow houses to erect the 42 foot wide 17 East 80th Street for his family. Hiram C. Bloomingdale of the department store that bears his family name also built 11 East 80th Street as a family residence. The lovely quartet from 22 to 28 East 80th Street were erected by the architectdeveloper Charles Graham, and number 26 was purchased by an industrialist for his daughter and her new husband. Of the four, only 26 East 80th Street has retained its original stoop, imposing doorway and shuttered window seats as originally designed. Its commercial and residential zoning offers unusual flexibility in how the building may be used.THE RESIDENCESheathed in red brick and brownstone and displaying features of the QueenAnne and neoRenaissance styles both encouraging an architect to select among a wide variety of classical motifs to create a unique result this 23 footwide townhouse adds a distinctive presence to the magnificent treelined block. From the gracious stoop entry on the parlour floor, the airy entry hall leads to the front living room which includes an elegant grand woodburning fireplace as well as window seats and custom cabinetry. The rear of the parlour floor has a formal dining room. Connected to the living room by pocket doors, the entire parlour floor can accommodate up to 50 dinner guests. Opposite the dining room entry is a large guest coat closet and butler&s pantry, ideal for the many receptions held.Past the planted forecourt, the garden level entry begins with a mud room and powder room. A large twowindowed breakfast room opens to the chef&s kitchen which includes twin SubZero refrigerators and an expansive professional Garland range and granite counters. Flanked by ample storage on either side, the corridor leads to a rear garden and separate staff/guest suite with full bath and kitchenette. For flexibility there are two entrances to the residence.
