4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI am extremely disappointed with the overall experience my child had within the special needs department at this high school. During her freshman and sophomore years, I was repeatedly reassured that she was doing well academically and making appropriate progress. Looking back, I feel I was gaslighted into believing everything was on track when serious concerns were being overlooked.By her junior year, I became deeply concerned that my child was unable to read or write at even an elementary level despite years in the program. When I raised these concerns, I sought the support of an advocate because I felt my concerns were not being taken seriously. Shortly afterward, her social worker was changed, which only reinforced my belief that issues were being recognized but not openly addressed.Once an advocate became involved, I noticed that more interventions and changes were suddenly implemented. This raised concerns for me because it felt like additional support could have been provided much earlier. Unfortunately, I also felt that the pattern of minimizing concerns continued, with statements being made about what my child could supposedly do that did not match what I was seeing firsthand at home and in daily life.Between her junior and senior years, I changed her diploma path hoping it would better support her needs but later switched it back after realizing meaningful academic progress still was not occurring. I know my child is capable of learning. When information, skills, and tasks are properly presented and taught in a way that meets her needs, she absolutely can learn and grow. I have personally seen this myself. My greatest concern is that I believe she was often given minimal academic expectations and may have been allowed excessive phone or internet access rather than receiving consistent instruction and meaningful educational opportunities. I feel that valuable years of potential learning and growth were missed, and as a parent that is heartbreaking. My intention in writing this is not simply to criticize, but to bring awareness to what I believe were serious shortcomings in the support and education my child received. Families trust schools to advocate for and educate their children, especially those with special needs, and I believe more should have been done.Parent Review2mo ago16 Reviews - B Mahlon Brown Junior High School

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageAs a parent of a second year brown student and also someone who attended brown myself, I must say this is the worst school I’ve ever encountered not only as a student, but as a parent dealing with staff. Staff is very unprofessional. My child has come home several times with stories about the staff mistreating them or saying inappropriate things in front of students and when brought to the attention of the assistant principal she wants to bring your child in for a one on one where they can intimidate them. Earlier in the year my child was being bullied by one of their teachers, and when brought to the staff‘s attention, we set up a parent teacher conference where the teacher sat across from my child glaring at them until they were so intimidated they no longer wanted to talk about the situation and burst into tears.Parent Review3mo ago16 Reviews - Edna F Hinman Elementary School

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI had the worst experience here with my child in special needs first year this year at this school first day of school fight breaks out in the middle of the school campus with all the students present and not one staff member intervened to stop them until the police got called then second incident there PE teacher was arrested for taking inappropriate photos of a special needs student who was non verbal when the incident accrued we didn’t get any information if our student was involved or around that person they notified us of this incident at 4:30pm after school hours so we couldn’t get any information after asking the next day and reaching out to staff and his teacher I still didn’t get any information till days laters to find out my son was around the individual from the principal days later then the last incident my son was assaulted by another student who isn’t in the special needs and much older there nurse called and proceeded to tell me my son fell off the play ground I could here my son saying no he was pushed after pushing for more information is when I found out my son was battered by a 5th grade student not one adult present for the incident including his aid who was supposed to be there right next to him they tried telling me my son tripped this student without doing any investigation me knowing my son doesn’t even know what tripping is or how to do it with him being special needs knew wasn’t true and they tried to down play it and lied until I should up the school waited 2 hrs to find out what happened the principal didn’t know I was the mother of the injured student in the lobby he proceeded to question the involved students right in front of me as the student tried tell him what happened he stopped him mid sentence and said he didn’t care about what happened he just wants to know if it was accident or not they didn’t care about what happened to my son especially since he was new that year and this student who did the injury had been there since kindergarten they completely dismissed my son after fighting to change schools his last day only one staff member actually said good bye to my son the front office lady ,his teacher the principal not the vice principal came out to say anything to my son on his last day In There care they don’t care about there students they just wanna cover things up don’t send your special needs kids there all they care about is there school not getting in trouble not our kidsParent Review9mo ago16 Reviews - Check out schools near 1601 Athol Ave.

"There are families in the neighborhood and lots if kids play basketball or go to the pool. Also look into a magnet or charter school for the best experience but the normal zoned school isn't bad if your kids are already doing well in school. "
