8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI’m about to graduate from this school. It’s probably the best public middle school on island, although you cannot compare any Hawaii schools to those on the mainland. (Most) Teachers here are the best I’ve ever had mainland or not. Be warned that this school has a serious vaping problem. At any given time, there is at least one person vaping in the bathrooms and they have had to close down all bathrooms except one in the past due to this issue. All in all, good school but has a lot of issues.Student Review1mo ago - Kalaheo High School

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI taught here 1 year and substitute taught for 1 year. I would still be working if we had not moved, and would be working full time if I did not now have children of my own. A previous review said that teachers are "dropping like flies" and although I sympathize this may happen in part for negative causes, there are many reasons why teachers are hard to keep in Hawai'i, and many reasons why a teacher may leave a position, including finances, military duties, and cost of childcare. I have many fond memories here, and really miss the staff and students. I know that it is hard to form a community when many of the students are military or will eventually leave Kailua. I would say though that there are members of the staff who care for students deeply, and in some ways, high school is what you make it. It is still a public high school, with all of those issues, but I would say that I am happy to see Mr. James Rippard as the principal as he struck me as a man of integrity and great care for students, and it is heartening to have such persons in charge. If you want a more sheltered school, consider paying for private, but if you need a public school, there are many caring staff members and your student will meet people from all over the world in their classroom with varied experiences. There are also AP courses and interesting classes here that you may not find elsewhere, including marine science, culinary class, and natural resources. One thing I did not like was all of the college reps coming in to recruit students. I know this is an issue with all public high schools, but most jobs in Hawai'i do not require degrees, and the cost is not worth it for most people that want to stay in Hawai'i, and leaving island for university can be hard for community. I personally loved teaching here and loved the students, despite how crazy everything can be in Hawai'i. When I taught, I took students out on a beach cleanup and we cleaned up 3,000 lb. of trash with Sustainable Coastlines, and brought in plankton and algae for labs...my favorite memories are laughing with students and seeing them grow and learn. If you are considering Kalaheo High School, take the time to take a tour.Teacher Review2y ago - Ka'ohao Public Charter School

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageSchool is above average for Oahu, similar to other elementary schools in Kailua. After reading the last review I had to submit. We have a different experience. Yes 2 of the teachers mentioned are great and caring (1st & 2nd grade) yes the new director is a HUGE improvement over the last principal, but many students & parents have a different view point of the art "teacher" and that includes my family. Constantly hearing complaints about her yelling at the students, not speaking loud, yelling. Other parents & grandparents have heard her yelling at her classes when on campus and passing her classroom. Some students do not want to go to art because of this and because they have no opportunity to be creative in her class. Quote from my 5th grader "we have to do everything her way, we do not get to be creative." Three of my children have had this experience, they and many of our friends children have had this experience with this individual. I hesitate to call her a teacher because she is not certified to be one. Some of the art the children produce looks good but there is a sameness about it. I appreciate that they have an art program here, just wish someone else was teaching it.Parent Review10y ago - Anuenue School

"Kailua is a beautiful small town that replicates the spirit of Hawai’i in a community. My grandfather lived and built a small house in Kailua where he raised my mother and her siblings. My mother took over the house where I currently reside. I’ve always loved and lived in Kailua. It’s deep Hawaiian history and ever growing community is beautiful. "

"Good people and beautiful atmosphere, pricey neighborhoods lead to great views and tons of amenities in a coastal community. Schools are best in terms of comparison to other parts of the island, and definitely beneficial to parents with kids requiring a proper and well facilitated education. Streets are clean and safe, traffic is low and quiet, and a decent amount of dining options for special nights out. Transit time to neighboring areas is reasonable depending on departure times. Highly recommended if beaches and outdoor life is a value, as it’s home to two of the top beaches in the world. Outdoor enthusiast will enjoy quick access to great water sports and scenic hikes that surpass expectations. "

"My commute from my neighborhood is awesome compared to other places on the island. I can get onto the H3 which can take me to the west side of the island or I can easily get to the Pali to get to downtown Honolulu. Access to the Likelike through kaneohe which is the next neighboring town to us is easy and can be a great alternate if there’s traffic on either the H3 or the Pali. We can also take a scenic route through Waimanalo to go through Hawai’i Kai to get into town if we wanted to take that option. We have many great options."

"We have multiple events throughout the year. The “I Love Kailua”, really rallies up the whole Kailua community, using entertainment, food, games, etc. Families line up the side of the street for the Holiday Parades. Multiple times in the week we have farmers Markets but Thursday’s farmers market really bring the family together. Our 4th of July fireworks is the perfect way for the entire Kailua to be out enjoying the beautiful sky lights as it is lit up from the art display of the fireworks."

"I’ve lived in Kailua for 14 years and love everything about it. From the small mixture of old and newer town with new development, everything is in close proximity. Majority of the people here are very friendly and just have a lot of aloha. There are lots of community events and things that gets the whole kailua involved. I love this place I call home, Kailua."
