My child recently graduated from Cabot Elementary, and we had a very positive experience there. I found the teaching staff across all grades to be supportive, approachable, and genuinely invested in making learning fun. As with any school, there were certainly teachers who stood out, but overall, I found the teachers easy to communicate with and truly caring about their students.My older children attended a different elementary school in Newton, and, relatively speaking, I felt Cabot was particularly strong in science and math.In terms of special education and learning support, my child was very well supported at Cabot. Early on, one of the teachers noticed that my child benefited from some additional help with executive functioning and classroom seating accommodations to help maintain focus. We had him evaluated and ultimately put a 504 plan in place. This was exactly the right level of support—he had no difficulty accessing the curriculum; he simply needed some additional time and structure to stay organized. Each year, I was impressed that his teachers had clearly read his plan and were thoughtful about discussing what was and wasn’t working for him.Cabot is one of the larger elementary schools in Newton, with four full classes in my child’s grade. Despite its size, I found it very easy to build connections with other families. Participating in school-sponsored events like the Cabot Fair and Cabot Picnic, as well as volunteering for Color Day or field trips, gave our family plenty of opportunities to get to know other parents and children.There is also a strong sense of community among the kids. Many children stay after school to play on the playground, even if they aren’t enrolled in the after-school program. On weekends, it’s common to find groups of kids playing Gaga ball or soccer on the field. Overall, I found Cabot to be a welcoming school where it was easy for both parents and children to make connections.
