"You have to really look hard into the schools. All districts are not created equal and this is NOT one of the better ones. As for the neighborhood itself, each block has a different personality. One block may be safe and if you go 2 blocks away, it’s dangerous. Check the Citizen app to see which to avoid."

Bus and train transportation is abundant as well as nearby restaurants, hair and nail salons, drug stores, laundromats, child care and schools. This is a real family friendly place to live. There are some rougher areas of course but for the most part a nice place to live. "

Jamaica Guide

What's it like to live in Jamaica?

People who prefer a relaxed atmosphere will enjoy Jamaica. There is a fair amount of greenery in this part of the city as there are numerous tree-lined streets. There are around 10 green spaces nearby for residents to visit, like Park and King Park, and they are very well-located, making it easy to reach them. This neighborhood is reasonably quiet overall, as there isn't a lot of street noise or city clamor - although that is not the case near Van Wyck Expressway or the railway line.

What kinds of homes are available in Jamaica?

Large apartment buildings are the most common housing type, representing roughly one third of buildings in Jamaica, and the remaining dwellings are mainly small apartment buildings, duplexes, and single detached homes. Most of the housing growth in this part of the city happened pre-1960. This area offers mainly two bedroom and three bedroom homes. Roughly two thirds of the population of this neighborhood rent their home whereas the remainder are owners.

What are the schools, restaurants and shopping like in Jamaica?

Locals will welcome that no matter where their property is located in Jamaica, primary as well as high schools are nearby. Home buyers can choose between public and private elementary schools. Regarding food, home buyers in Jamaica will value that a general and a specialty grocery store is always only a very short walk away. Moreover, Jamaica is a good place in which to go out to eat, and a limited variety of cafes can be found as well. Residents have access to a fair number of clothing stores within walking distance.

What are the best ways to get around in Jamaica?

Jamaica will attract homeowners that appreciate different means of transportation. The public transit network in this part of the city is especially convenient as a consequence of various nearby rapid transit stations on the F | Queens Blvd Express/ 6 Av Local Line, J | Nassau St Local Line, E | 8 Avenue Local Line, Howard Beach Train and Z | Nassau St Express, and around 50 nearby bus lines. Active home buyers will also be pleased with the especially walk-friendly character of this neighborhood; meeting daily needs is convenient by walking, and a variety of businesses are close by. Even though this part of the city features a good cycling infrastructure, this neighborhood is not particularly cycling-friendly because there are a good number of slopes.
