Read what parents are saying about St. Nicholas Elementary SchoolWe are members of the local parish and send our kids to St. Nicholas School. With one class per grade, the faculty, staff, and other parents really know each kid creating a tight knit community, uncommon in the Bay Area. Jan Popolizio, the Principal, has a laser focus on the quality of instruction along with continually improving academics. Father John Poncini, the Pastor, is committed to faith formation and their collective mission to develop the whole child. As a parent, the education of my children is my single most important priority. I have 100% confidence in the teachers, staff, along with the parent and parish community to develop my kids to be the best they can be!

Posted by a parent on 10/8/2018A warm and inviting campus and community. The school sits tucked away in the beautiful Los Altos Hills. The school offers great academics, faith formation and communuty involvement. Many who are not Catholic also choose this school because of the amazing atmosphere. Our family loves attending all of the events that the school and community offers. It not only allows the children time to connect outside of school hours but for the parents to as well. The school has a low student to teacher ratio and great resources. The school competes very well with the high academic standards of its neighboring Los Altos public schools.
Posted by a parent on 11/17/2017I'm a happy teacher at St. Nicholas. Besides the beautiful campus, . It is a supportive and caring place to work. We have excellent teachers and leadership. We are using the best teaching practices for 21st Century learners. Our program allows teachers the ability to individualize instruction. We are teaching our Catholic values throughout the day. The children are compassionate and Christine citizens.
Posted by a community member on 5/24/2016We love St. Nicholas Catholic School! The academics are fantastic; the school is a nationally recognized Blue Ribbon School. The classes all have dedicated aides, so the teacher student ratio is something around 1:11, so there's a lot of small group learning and individualized attention. Even in the lower grades the kids are doing cross-disciplinary projects. They have a reading specialist for the lower grades who is just amazing. I love so many of the teachers. There's also music, art, and physical education, two fantastic science teachers with a great science lab, and a dedicated technology teacher with a brand-new technology center. They've just gone to 1:1 tablets for all grades. The academic focus really pays off - St. Nicholas kids go to terrific high schools (and ultimately colleges), with something like a 99%+ acceptance rate at St. Francis and something similar at Bellarmine College Prep, as well as many of the other Catholic High schools in the area.In addition to academics, St. Nicholas is an amazing community. There's a real emphasis on loving one another. Their buddy system (where a kindergartener is paired with a 4th grader, they will be buddies for the next 4 years) really fosters bonds between upper & lower grades from the beginning. They have a program for the older kids to help manage playground conflict. The kids regularly participate in community service projects. They all know one another; the big kids are really kind and really do know the little ones. And when we go to the grocery store or downtown Los Altos or Mountain View, and we see St. Nicholas folks - and we say hello, and sometimes stop and talk.

From the first moment we stepped onto the campus, we were amazed at the welcoming atmosphere and the scope of hands-on activities. We’ve never seen a school that offered such an array of experiential learning opportunities, fostered critical and ethical thinking, and nurtured such a strong sense of community. For instance, our older grandson’s teacher learned that there would be ‘historic’ low tides at Pillar Point near Half Moon Bay in two weeks. The teacher quickly organized a field trip, rallied chaperones, and led her students on an exploration of the vast tidepools with guidance from a young biologist. This was after school hours and lasted into the late evening so the students could look for bioluminescent organisms in the tide pools. What stood out for me was the teacher’s passion for learning and sharing discoveries alongside the students, and the way she asked questions that inspired them to reach their own conclusions. In another instance, the school received a grant for entrepreneurial skill building incorporating the school garden and event planning. Working closely with faculty, students learned to plan an event, secure supplies, harvest food from the garden and transform it all into a seven course meal, all from scratch, and beautifully executed. The students were clearly so proud of their accomplishments and the new skills they developed in the process.Equally important are the ways this school fosters ethical thinking. For example, the students study the myths and origin stories from cultures across the globe, and embedded within these tales are exemplars for living by a moral code. Our younger grandson especially loved hearing these stories from his teacher, and we still have the beautiful artwork he created as part of those lessons. This school fosters a deep sense of community among the students, who develop bonds as they move through the years in a cohesive cohort. This contributes to their sense of well being and social emotional intelligence. Community extends beyond their classrooms to their family members, who are invited into the school and provided with opportunities to engage. Plays, potlucks, field trips, sports and the famous Winter Faire all offer opportunities to engage. Our family is grateful for the ways the Waldorf School of the Peninsula has enriched all of our lives.Other Review2mo ago - Ventana School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy daughter started kindergarten in Ventana. She is now in 1st grade. Our experience so far has been great. She loves going to school. She actually misses school when she gets sick and has to stay home.We picked Ventana because of its SEL-inspired program. But I do see my daughter making good progress on academics too. They have math, reading and writing workshops daily. On top of that they have speciality programs throughout the week. Such as science, art, and PE. You also have the option to sign up for more enrichment classes after school (3-4:30). There are a variety of them.Besides their program, I also like that they have a much bigger space compared to their student size. It has multiple multi-purpose indoor and outdoor spaces. It’s a secular school with a touch of spirituality and it’s a very diverse community even by the bay area standards.Parent Review5mo ago
