What Locals Say about Oakland Avenue/Harrison Street

  • Strifeanddiscord
"this neighborhood has quite a lot that's in walking distance. lots of people are all out exercising or walking their dogs most of the time. it's mostly fairly quiet, except for that freeway noise. with only a 15 minute walk to downtown it has a City feel but also a neighborhood feel at the same time"

  • April T.
"When driving, I can quickly get to a freeway within 2 to 8 minutes depending on which I take. When taking Uber or Lyft to BART, the pick ups are always under a 4 minute wait and I get to BART within 4-6 minutes depending on traffic."

"We have an annual neighborhood party in August in Oak Glen Park on the evening of National Night Out Day. "

"It’s near a freeway and people tend to drive quickly coming off of the freeway so that’s not particularly safe. "

"I make use of electric scooters and BART to get around. Otherwise I'll walk to neighborhood spots. there are plenty of bike lanes, however many of the roads are not well maintained."

"Very close to public Transportation and lake Merritt. The neighborhoods are quite aside from busy streets but nice location "

"I've lived in this neighborhood for 11 years and it's a great little spot. The neighbors are friendly, there is a neighborhood group called Harri-Oak, that meets to discuss issues and keep us all united. The neighborhood has a lot of dogs, some kids coming in. There is a good mix of families, older folks & the younger set. All the oak trees lining my street on Kempton are awesome, the corner park has quite a few kid parties and gatherings lately. It's a great little neighborhood. "

"Amazingly walkable to transportation, groceries, and restaurants plus lovely Lake Merritt which is best enjoyed during the day. Very hip. Fairly safe but you need covered parking, cars do get broken into. "

"There is still quite a bit of crime in this area, unfortunately. Walking distance to downtown is not short; at night, it is very risky to walk. If you live anywhere in the East Bay, you definitely need a car."

"Public transportation in the Bay Area is FAR from perfect. But it provides an easy alternative to morning traffic. "

"Best up-and-coming neighborhood in Oakland. Walkable to Grand Lake Theater, shopping, dining, bart station, farmer's market, fun local bars. It's one of the better kept secrets in the Bay Area."

"Nothing really, it’s kinda just a typical gentrified neighborhood. In a few months it should be a little nicer with a SoulCycle or something of the sort."

"Myself and my parents used to live here. It is a short walk to the lake, and 14 minutes walk to the 19th Street BART station. You can also take 51A bus to and from the BART station. 51A bus also go to UC campus. On the weekend, you can take FREE Broadway shuttle to Oakland downtown and BART for Restaurants, Shopping, Entertainment & Nightlife. Easy freeway access to I-580, I-80, Hwy 24, and I-980, and only 10 miles to San Francisco downtown from I-80."
