What Locals Say about South Padre Island

  • Reta Durham
"I just recently moved from South Padre Island , but still work here as a realtor. It is a resort town on the Gulf of Mexico. Loved living here, but it is very expensive. If you live north on Gulf Blvd it is usually quieter than in the middle of town. The east/gulf side is pretty busy during spring break and summer which means more noise and traffic. It can take over an hour to get over the causeway to the mainland in Port Isabel. "

"Beautiful SPI; but after a week-nothing to do. I spent about 60 days here and walking on the beach looking out over the bay were wonderful. However I would never live here"

"It is located close to the beach. There are several dog owners walking their dogs on the beach. The neighborhood appears to be friendly and not alot of uncontrollable partying outside at night. Family oriented community. "

"Amberjack st is the center of everything! Casa del Sol is right across the street from the beach and a cute little burger joint - Boomerang Billy's. Grab a drink and stroll the beach. On the west side are a number of hot spots that have great food, drink, entertainment and live music. Or drop a line in the bay for a quiet fishing moment while watching the colorful fantastic sunset. "

"Mesquite is a great street. A few steps to the beach access where there is a great little restaurant - Palms on the Beach. You have to get a Mango Margarita to go and stroll along the beautiful beach. "

"I walk the beach, kayak the waterways, windsurf both sides of the water , kiteboard both sides and love the ease and friendliness of these waters compared to many other place I have been. The beaches truly are one of the top ten sandy beaches in the USA. You can stay in beutifull condos at a reasonable price on the beach or bayside, play in the shallow waves, the kids love it and the grand parents love it and so do I. When you vist the windy sports of kiting or wiind surfing, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding(a big surfboard that you paddle) you will notice all ages from young to old . I know many 60 and 70 plusers whoe have recently learned and enjoying these sports as well as countless kids. Attitude is everything. Take time to enjoy a sweet place to relax and do nothing but watch the waves or be as involved as you choose. Either way it is a lot of fun. Lessons and rentals are abundant. So are the modestly priced great restaurants. Its alomost cheaper to eat out than in! Enjoy the bird migrations the wonderfull water life of dolphins and fishing are world class all in water ways that are only chest deep and warm. That's what I mean by friendly. If you have'nt visted, you are missing a beautiful USA beach that is easy to fly into or drive. Enjoy your life, you only get to do it this time. SJ"
