The Russian Immersion program is particularly awesome, what a gift to learn a language in a natural and developmentally appropriate way. Our older child has loved every single teacher so far, our second child can't wait to start in the fall. 5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI live in the Service neighborhood area, but I chose to go to West High for a reason. I am currently a 9th grader. West has the best students in Alaska by a landslide. It has the only IB program, the only Highly Gifted program, and some of the best sports teams in the state. It has so many opportunities for students to take. Through my first semester, my teachers have been great. If something is wrong, just talk to them and they are more than happy to fix it. Most of the students in the neighborhood school program aren't the best learners, or at least aren't motivated to learn. However, motivated students have options for a high level of learning. West is in the Anchorage School District, which has had some problems with funding recently, so some programs may be cut. However, I would still recommend West as the high school of choice in Anchorage. If it is too long of a drive, Service High and South High aren't bad options either.Student Review3w ago

"Spenard is quirky. Fish Creek Park trail is nice and has just been redone. There are many rough spots along the actual Spenard road but most neighborhoods are pretty safe. Lots of families and kids."

"There are a lot of owners who choose not to put leashes on their dogs. The area is full of vagrants and drunkards. Police sirens are heard from open windows at night, causing dogs to bark."

"that this is a nice neighborhood with a bad reputation. yes there is bums, hookers and drugs in this area but its really on one street and as long as I lived here I've learned that you wont really effect your home if you dont involve yourself.."

"I have lived here for seven years. crime is somewhat a problem. you have to keep things locked up. we walk with dogs so there is minimal danger from the homeless population. while this is a fairly nice neighborhood there are bad elements.; "
