6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThe only way to have a decent high school experience here is to fit in with the highland clique. I have taken college level courses here where teachers spend the majority of the period gossiping and making plans for the weekend with their favorite students. If teachers and staff like you, your grades will reflect it and you will not get in trouble. Teachers that get the same complaints everyday will not get in trouble. Everyday I would sit in class and watch teachers pick apart the same students. If you want a complete high school education you will need motivate yourself to spend time out of class teaching yourself. I dropped my study halls to take classes that sounded interesting and the classes ended up being just like a study hall. There are a couple of amazing teachers at highland that I’m happy I had. I played a lot of sports while I was in high school and I had one good coach that left after one season because the drama in highland’s staff was too much. The difference between the way the girls and guys sports teams are treated is amazing. Almost every away game the school forgot to get us a bus. One time they made three different sports teams sit in one bus to their away games. Many students were sitting on each other’s laps or in the middle of the bus isle. I’m sure many students still have videos of it. When I went to high school there were a lot of fights and kids literally did drugs in class. Multiple times throughout high school guidance counselors would tell me that they were unable to move me into the classes I wanted so I would have to ask around about classes to figure out a schedule that works and then walk the guidance counselor’s through the process of changing my schedule. One year everyone’s schedule got messed up so bad the guidance office shut down for a week because so many students were coming. If you’re able to fit in and teach yourself, you could have a decent experience here.Other Review2y ago - Highland Middle School

"It’s a small quiet town. But with amazing locations nearby. Mountains nearby for fun hikes and more, college town next door if you want to eat at various types of restaurants, then on the other side you can go over the bridge to the suburbs with a mall."

"We moved to Highland as we needed a centralized location for our service business. We are less than 15 minutes to major highways, we can hop on a train to NYC in 10 minutes as well as 2 major hospitals. Major shopping is accessible both in Kingston (20 minutes North) or in Poughkeepsie (10 minutes). Thruway takes you to Paramus and Woodbury in 1 hr. If you are into Hiking and more natural items, New Paltz has tons of activities as well as Northern Ulster. HOWEVER, best of all is now the Walkway, Rail Trail which goes to Hopewell, and Franny Reese park for great walking and hiking along river. History buffs have West Point and all the mansions from the rich of the late 1800's and early 1900's. Nightlife around Highland is very diverse as Poughkeepsie and New Paltz are 10 minutes each way. The beauty of Highand, which is what we love most, is it is a small family oriented town. We can go to Poughkeepsie and wherever, but at the end of the day, we get home to a quiet home to relax. The schools are wonderful, the teachers are hands on, and the community activities for families are never ending. As a local business owner, I can also say businesses are revitalizing, and you will find more Mom & Pop businesses than chain stores in our town (it's nice to walk into a deli and they know you by name!). Hope this helps - A very happy Highland resident. Moving close to the Hamlet offers you quite a bit! However, the mix of homes and residential neighborhoods caters to almost every desire. Best of all, in the fall, drive through the town and you smell the Apples! What more can you ask for! "
