The Sagaponack School is a very special place, I’m sure you’ve all realized that by now. So much of who I am today has been defined by my years here and I feel so lucky that so many of my memories and so much of my learning was done within these 4 walls. (quite literally 4 walls). Without fail, every single day at recess, all the girls would gather around the big oak tree and set to work. Hospitals, houses, stores, restaurants, all crafted for the fairies of Sagaponack. This is how my recess was spent for all the years that I was at Sagg School. 1st graders and 4th graders alike all pitched in whether it be assembling a hospital bed made of twigs, or crushing up buttercup flowers to make butter for their fairy bread. We used our imaginations and played collaboratively to work towards a project we were all so passionate about. We all found so much joy in caring and providing comfort for the fairies, something we were always taught to do at Sagg School. Whenever there was a new student we were prompted to introduce ourselves, ask them questions and make them feel at home in our close-knit class of students. We were taught that ‘everybody plays or nobody plays’ something especially important with a smaller group of students. Mr. Scamell would lead the recess period and his encouragement of our ideas and involvement in our games was what allowed this fairy world to be created. To this day I still consider my unique passions and strong leadership a product of the environment I grew through at Sagg School. I always cherish this sweet memory and it is a testament to the many things I learned at Sagg School about myself and about my friends and peers. Every time I walk back into the Sagg School I can still feel the magic I felt through all my years there. To those of you are graduating today and moving on to new experiences, I can guarantee you will still feel the same.
