Description

Restored, vintage studios in the Des Moines Western Gateway

The Argonne was built at the corner of 17th and Grand in 1919 when this area of Grand Ave housed the original "Auto Row" in Des Moines. It was built to house people working at the Ford plant across the street, which is now the Des Moines Schools Central Campus. With 4 stories of apartments above its street-level retail, the Argonne's first-floor retail space used to house a Packard showroom and a Cadillac repair shop. The building was restored and modernized in 2020, retaining the original charm and the first-floor retail space. Renovations were respectful of the original building, but did add modern conveniences like dishwashers and in-home laundry. Parking is available on-site.

"Very Friendly small town Feel but not cleanly and nothing for kids to do. I love downtown, but it needs a lot of work with kid Friendly activities and picking up the streets. I see workers but I don't typically see them actually pick up"

"Downtown is a convenient location to access the river walk way as well as the bike path that leads to Gray's Lake for daily dog walks and green space. Dog waste bags are provided every couple blocks downtown in case you don't have any on hand. The Riverwalk dog park is a short drive/bike ride away for off leash exercise."

"Downtown Des Moines is small, easily navigated, and is pretty quiet. There are usually plenty of events on the weekends at the Wells Fargo Arena. Court Avenue has plenty of bars and restaurants. There are numerous other restaurants within half a mile. There are plenty of parks and a nice Riverwalk. One the other side of the river are plenty of shops and restaurants. The Capitol building is over there as well and is one of the best looking I have been to. The only issue is that everything closes pretty early. I don't mind because I am normally asleep by 10-11."
