Worst school experience imaginable. School desperately needs better leadership. Poor students, many of them fall through the cracks because no one in administration cares or does their job well.

Garfield High School has some absolutely terrible teachers. Whoever does the hiring should be fired.

Garfield is an interesting school. it is a happy mix of students are highly gifted, neighborhood students and those lucky to get a seat through school choice.. As a result you have a very well rounded school with something for everyone, be it a choice of over 20 some AP classes or a spot on the state championship basketball team or a musician in the top high school orchestra in the country or member of the Shakespeare club. This school has it all. For a large urban school it is very well run. The students are very active in the community.

This is sort of odd, but I swear Garfield has the prettiest student body. The teachers are sort of a mixed bag, but for the most part they are fairly good. Garfield has gotten some bad press lately and that seems to be overshadowing all the good things that happen there. The music program is great and the drama program is so underrated and awesome. Sports are getting better. The best part about Garfield is that everyone has some amazing special talent about them. You might find out the girl who sits behind you in language arts is a junior Olympic runner, or that guy in your chem class has a fairly successful bluegrass band. One problem is that like all other Seattle Schools, it's pretty underfunded. The students joke about how the school ran out of paper budget last year and how Garfield cut detention because it cost to much. Overall, Garfield is the coolest school in Seattle, or even all of Washington.

Garfield is a very mixed bag. My academic experience, coming out of the APP program, and having gotten very unlucky with teachers, was abysmal. It's staggering the amount of time that was wasted in half of my classes. I had three good classes: AP US, Biology and Marine Biology. I was otherwise very disappointed, and even these classes, though they were well-taught, could have been much better. My sister, on the other hand, has been very lucky with her teachers, and has been extremely happy with Garfield, academically and otherwise. We both agree that the students are excellent, and the school has some excellent extra-curricular opportunities. The outdoors program, POST, and the music program are both highlights, though with Mr. Acox approaching retirement and the splitting of APP, I worry about the jazz band's trajectory. If you get lucky and get involved, Garfield can be a great school. Chances are good that you will be seriously disappointed by academics here - there are a shocking number of truly terrible teachers at this school. I'm giving Garfield a four because I was quite unlucky with teachers, and entered with expectations that I now see were unreasonable.
