Just a toxic school with no support for students

As a parent of 3 very different children that have attended Newport High School over the past 7 years I certainly acknowledge the positive aspects of the School. If your child is a high achiever and fits the arbitrary mold of what the Principal considers acceptable, they wll be fine. However, if your family is mine, each one of your kids is a unique individual, each needs a different level and type of support, and each deserve to be treated with respect and never bullied, demeaned, humiliated and told things such as they will never succeed in "the real world". Espcially when it is a school adminstrator, in this case the Principal of school, Dion Yahoudy. When my child came home and told me what this Principal had said to her, I was shocked, appalled, and wanted to take action. After repeated attempts to speak with the Principal, but instead only hearing from an assistant principal who stated Yahoudy would call back. Which she never did. Without any other recourse, my child filed a formal complaint with the Bellevue School District. Unfortunately that complaint must have been lost along the way as no one has ever followed up with my child or me. At first I thought this must have been an isolated series of event - an anomoly in the record of a Principal who took over a top ranked school, and only brought its ratings down a few places. Then I began to read reviews here and other forums and I was shocked. In one comment, the mother of a student who had graduated while my child was still in middle school, reported a comment made to her daughter that was almost exactly the demeaning message this "educator" gave my Daughter. The message both my child and this other prior student received was that they weren't smart enough, they had the intelligence of an elementary school child, and would never make it through college. This woman is not just an embarrassment to herself, she is an embarrassment to the entire Bellevue School District.Unless the new permament BSD Superintendent actually listens to Students and Parents and removes this woman from a job she is clearly unfit to perform - I would strongly advise you to choose a different school in the district. This one is rotten at the top.

There are many great things about Newport: excellent AP teachers, a history of strong science and music programs, dedicated families and motivated students. Unfortunately, the teachers-union's toxic culture (Bellevue Education Association) has recently seeped into Newport as it has seeped into other Bellevue schools. A quick view of the union Facebook page will show gaslighting at play, and this has scared many Newport kids since some of their teachers are publicly active on social media. This has also become really bad with Covid, and the union push for "asynchronous and remote" instruction. If you want indefinite hybrid instruction, Newport may be the place for you. However, some teachers go so far as to mock and insult parents, administrators, other teachers...anyone...who questions their agenda. Imagine what this does to school spirit? Lastly, the union is driving a shift in "approved curricula" away from what was once the standard of quality instruction to unapologetic-politics and unproven instructional and grading methods (especially for social studies and English classes). So where Newport was once known for critical thinking, open dialogue, and superior education, the entire district is now known for divisiveness and lowered standards. This was once a great school/district, but only time will tell if it can get back on track. Before enrolling, look at social media and ask about current curriculum. Consider private schools.

My son and daughter went to this school and graduated in 2015 and 2016. A very competitive and very good public school.
