Coventry Elementary School

The teachers and staff are check collectors. If you have a problem, good luck trying to talk to the principal or the vice principal. Both are non existent. The staff will talk about you in front and behind your back. And they want to stop the bullying among the kids. It starts at the top. Considering removing my child from this school next school year.

Mount Vernon is an outstanding elementary school in the Tabb area of York County. The brand new principal who started during the 2024/2025 academic year is an excellent communicator and is highly visible in school. She is approachable, smart, and an asset to the school. The principal and vice principal together gifted brand new copies of the book “Wild Robot” to each Mount Vernon family, and the entire school began the academic year reading the book together over the course of a month, culminating in seeing the movie together. The PTA is outstanding- the leadership plans many events to involve parents in different aspects of the school- Helping Hands, Multiplication Madness, Trunk or Treat, Soup Luncheon for teachers and staff, Art in a Suitcase, winter holiday luncheon for parents and students, Wild Bingo, etc. The PTA initiative called “Multiplication Madness” was to get 3rd and 4th graders up to speed on all their multiplication facts. This was a fantastic idea by the PTA president. There was also a fun after school event called “Glow Bowl” coordinated by the PE Teacher. The teacher we had for the 2024/2025 school year was excellent and consistently showed up to teach. It’s amazing how much material the teacher and students cover in one academic year. The teachers are encouraging, kind, and priceless. Parents are involved at Mount Vernon. The morning pick up and afternoon drop off run very smoothly. The front office is efficient. Nice club offerings- yoga, chorus, drama, gardening, lego, First lego league, morning broadcasting, etc. The Odyssey of the Mind team seems to be very successful.Room for improvement:Less junk food in classrooms and cafeteriaMore outdoor recessDoesn’t seem to offer foreign languageNot a fan of 1:1 Chromebooks that 4th graders are required to bring home each night and take back to school each morning. Not a fan of so much screen time for elementary students during school hours, but that seems to be a YCSD policySo many quizzes & tests for 4th graders- it is a bit shocking- that might be a YCSD policy- not sureMaybe not the best school if your child loves the visual arts- you might want outside enrichment for thatIf you have a chance to live in this school zone, then you’ll be glad.

I regret ever sending my son to this “school.” What I thought was normal separation anxiety was actually genuine fear that my son experienced going to daycare each day. My son’s “teacher” was very unpleasant and seemed bothered by any of my questions or concerns. I never trusted that my son’s daily report was filled out correctly and he had constant issues with diaper rashes (he likely wasn’t changed often). I arrived to pickup my son early one day and noticed him outside on the playground. I decided to observe him for a bit before going inside and was horrified to see him bullied by another, clearly older child with no intervention from staff. They weren’t even supervising the children; they were too busy on their phones! I couldn’t have removed my son soon enough. He’s since started a different, much better daycare and the change in his behavior is astounding. I wish I could take back the months my son spent here; I feel so sorry for the emotional toll it took on him. I’ve since learned that other children have been physically harmed while attending this daycare, and I just can’t imagine what my son experienced behind closed doors. Staff members have shared pictures of moldy food in the refrigerator and described issues with roaches and fire hazards. I was also extremely disheartened to see how depressing the meals are that they serve these poor children; inmates are eating better. Overall, I can’t in good conscience recommend any parent send their children here. I implore you to please find literally any other place to keep your babies safe and free from harm.

Summit Christian Academy has been a fantastic experience for our family. Our children have grown so much in both knowledge and character. These teachers want our children to excel academically but truly care about the hearts of the students. We love the classical Christian education and discipleship model.

We had a terrific Kindergarten year. The guides are incredibly supportive and nurturing—our child now loves to learn and is thriving in the arts, sciences, and humanities. The school is inclusive and welcomes families from all backgrounds. They also do a wonderful job accommodating children with special needs to ensure they can thrive. While we’ve had a very positive experience overall, there is room to grow in how the school communicates with families to ensure clarity and consistency.
