Read what parents are saying about Orange Hunt Elementary SchoolMy son has attended OH for two years. We have loved all of the teachers he has encountered and they have really helped our son to become a motivated learner. With that said, I wish the administration were a little more engaged with families. It feels as though we aren’t welcome to come to the school, and there a very few non-military events that parents can attend. It would be great to involve the community more. The school is in such a great location to really invite parents in to be a part of their child’s education. Another thing I don’t love to hear, are the stories my son comes home telling. It seems like there are quite a few disruptive students in his classes and not a lot is done about the disruption to learning. While I recognize my child may be exaggerating, I’ve heard from families around the neighborhood who have similar experiences with their kids saying the same. It’s a little cause for concern that kids get to disrupt the class and be disrespectful to teachers and nothing is done about it. The German Immersion program is great too, however, students who are not part of the program lack enthusiasm for that specials.
Posted by a parent on 5/2/2023Post covid academics are marginal and student engagement has declined. There is not sufficient enrichment offering for those who need it. Communication from the school is marginal at best. It is hard to find out what is going on at OH. OHES’s military connection is too much. Orange hunt very much prides itself in a military identity as other commenters noted, at the expense of everyone who is not part of the military community or mindset. Even “spirit week” is based on a military theme. OHES is not a DOD school and should not be run like one. The German program and elementary language instruction is a unique asset to the school that sets OH apart, but is a major missed opportunity for the school to shine, with the over emphasis on military. As a positive, teachers are generally passionate and engaged. We’ve had great experiences with our children’s classroom teachers.
Posted by a parent on 4/13/2023We've had 2 kids go through this school in the past 8 years. When we first arrived, we we impressed by the welcoming atmosphere. The principal was engaged - he seemed to know every student's name and what they were up to - and this trickled down to his staff. There was little bullying, and the students seemed engaged. There were quarterly assemblies to recognize student achievement and parents were encouraged to attend and be a part of the school community. In the past five years, we've seen a change of administration and a huge change in environment. The new principal is fond of saying that OHES has the 2nd highest concentration of military families outside of Ft. Belvoir. My kids have commented that since we're not a miliary family and they're not in the German Immersion program, they "don't count" at OHES. There are no longer assemblies, no student government, no recognition -- the students have little to strive for and bad behavior is noticably worse. Since COVID, there have been few opportunities for parent engagement; Room Parents and Field Days are now the exception, rather than the rule. The school is woefully overcrowded; there are trailers taking up much of the playground that house an entire grade, and kids are relegated to the bus loop on alternating days for recess since the playground is overcrowded. There are a handful of teachers who honestly don't seem to even like children, but there are just as many wonderful educators who go above and beyond for the kids at OHES. I hope they'll stick around! It's a shame it is no longer the great neighborhood school it once was.
Posted by a parent on 6/25/2022COVID really showed the schools true colors. Teachers put kids second, prioritized working from home even when it longer made sense.
Posted by a parent on 5/15/2022I've been happy with 2 students here. They're very different learners and both have been engaged, encouraged, and challenged. I also have had a child at Sangster, and think Orange Hunt does a better job fostering community. (Sangster likes to remind you how awesome they are...but that's just because they have the Advanced Academic kids from Orange Hunt + 2 other schools in their building.) I don't know why Great Schools rating is lower for Orange Hunt. Maybe because we have so many kids? This school is great. You'll be lucky if your kids go here

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageCardinal Forest Elementary has dramatically improved in the four years I have been associated with and have kids attending this school!! The addition of the Advanced Academic Program (AAP) has been huge in retaining talented young students instead to going to Keene Mill Elementary for the AAP magnet program there. The results are visible in the school’s significantly improved test scores and ratings by both GreatSchools and Niche, and moreover in the feeling and vibe within the school. The teachers know they are being successful, they are being recognized for it, and it permeates throughout the entire student body. CFES has become a sought-after elementary school, and for very justified reasons. Look at the results! And visit the school to see and feel for yourself!Parent Review1mo ago - Hunt Valley Elementary School

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWe moved into this school this year and have a 2nd and kindergartener. So far, I haven’t been impressed. First, the school is huge, over 750 students, so this is not a neighborhood community-feel elementary school. My youngest son had a concert at the school for Thanksgiving and as we were leaving he said goodbye to the music teacher. She responded, “bye.” I could tell that she had no idea what my son’s name was, and that does not make me feel good as a parent. Secondly, the speech teacher, special ed teacher and a few others tried to bully me into putting my son on a speech IEP. I have nothing against IEPs, when necessary. But they brought up a speech concern and immediately told me the only option was to put him on an IEP. It was very clear to me that they wanted their government funding for number of IEPs in the school. That was all they cared about. I stood strong and wouldn’t sign off on it, but what a shame that everything is about money even at an elementary school. Third, the principal— who even is this lady? I barely see her, and the one time I did see her, it was about 30 minutes before dismissal and she was standing in the hall by the front door with her purse in her hand like she was getting ready to leave. Before the students were even dismissed! The school communication is awful, we never really know what’s going on, and some teachers relay a lot more information than others. It’s disorganized. Finally, the school does not seem like a welcoming place. The kids are not allowed to bring in anything for their birthdays— no treats, no little goody bags… so to make my child feel special I have to throw a large, expensive birthday party. Whenever we have a meeting at the school (just a few times) we ring the doorbell and the office staff asks who we are and what we want. When we respond with “we have a conference with so-and-so” we get questioned again — “well what time is your meeting/conference?” It’s like they don’t really want parents there. Same goes for field trips or class parties, they allow 2-3 parents to sign up and then don’t allow anyone else to come. Because I didn’t sign up to volunteer for my son’s holiday party in the first 5 minutes of it being released, I am not allowed to be there. Difficult to explain to my 5-year-old. I will say that my each of my son’s teachers seem pretty good, but overall, the school and community has been a huge disappointment. I would not recommend to others.Parent Review4mo ago - Rolling Valley Elementary School

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWe moved here last year and this was my child's first year starting school. It was a bumpy transition in the beginning since they are on the Autism Spectrum. But I had many staff members help my child find their way to a relatively solid routine so they could focus on learning. The IEP process was a long journey, but it also provided me time to meet with the staff assisting my child in a regular basis. There weren't any turnovers throughout the entire school year, which made it consistent. So far, we are happy with the school and staff. And look forward to next school year.Parent Review9mo ago - White Oaks Elementary School

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageDaughter attends there. Never had a problem with any type of learning issues. Teachers and staff are friendly and polite, with weekly updates from the teachers. PTA is very involved in the "going on's". Learning environment is inviting. School is also an AAP school for which I have no negative rules. Girls Scout troop meets at the school.Parent Review7mo ago - Cherry Run Elementary School

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMark Bibbee is the issue. Being that he is the principal it has a trickle down effect. Staff are lazy and rude. When you bring it to Mr Bibbees attention he says he will do something about it but does nothing. You can see him regularly flirting with staff members and moms. Bullying is an issue. My son has another kid hold a pencil to his eye in the lunch room. Mr Bibbee did nothing because the student was a staff members child. My son had to hide from the kid for the rest of the school year. I do not recommend this school while Mr Bibbee is the principalParent Review1y ago - Newington Forest Elementary School

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageSangster is an excellent school. Strong focus on academics and emotional well-being of the student. Parents are very engaged and supportive. The faculty is amazing and provides differential academic attention. Homework is reasonable and enrichment activities are plenty. The Covid protocols have been strong.Parent Review1y ago
