I just moved to the area, I am a single mother so my son has to put himself on the bus 3 days a week because I have a decent commute to work. He has a phone so that he can contact me if or when he needs me and so I know when He gets to school. My son missed the bus the other day, not only did I not get contacted immediately that my child was taken to school by someone else, but hours later when I was finally contacted I was basically belittled and made out to be a terrible mom by the assistant principal. I have always made sure to keep in contact with the school in regards to my child and have always been respectful. To get a call hours after your child arrives at school by someone else and to be belittled is something that I don't tolerate. I work hard to provide for my kids and I will not have someone who doesn't know my situation make me out to be a mom who is careless. Today I got a phone call saying social services was contacted in regards to my child. Are you kidding me? Not only has this school year seemed highly unorganized but I have not had a good feeling about this school from the get go. I will be transferring my child elsewhere. I should have followed my gut to begin with and saved myself the trouble.

My kids spent one year here and after that I transferred them to stanley. My daughter who is 8 has weight issues and one day she went to school in a tank top and her teacher actually told her she was to big to be wearing it so basically calling her fat. She came home and I immediately new by the look on her face something was wrong. She began to cry and told me what happened. I went to the principal who took up for the teacher, I have gad many negative things about him and other staff which all seem to be true. I also had issues with my sons kindergarten teacher and putting her hands on him, he came home one day and his wrist was red where she squeezed it, again went to the principal and nothing was done. Do yourself a favor and keep your kids far away from this school.

In regards to the completely false review below- I am the mother of the child mentioned below who was struck by a vehicle outside Luray elementary last fall. My child had been released from school and was disobeying his mother when he was struck. What happened was no one's fault, just an unfortunate accident. The staff at the school went above and beyond to help myself, my child and the emergency workers. My son moved himself out of the road. The school nurse, the principle, the vice principal, my son's teacher as well as county administrators were on the scene immediately. I was fortunate to be living in a small town where all the parties knew my name and knew my son during this time. We moved out to the Virginia countryside six years ago from the affluent DC suburbs and even though the move has had its challenges and adjustments, I have never regretted our decision. Luray Elementary is filled with caring professionals who do an outstanding job with the resources they have. Perhaps reviewers on this site should have all their facts straight before they post untrue and disparaging remarks in such a public forum.

HORRIBLE! They put the staff first and children second . My son had an abusive teacher last year (mercer), who put her hands on my child more then once and another child, both the school board and social services was contacted and nothing was done. This year we are having problems with the RC lady and her attitude, I reported her and nothing was done and when I try to speak to the principal about anything involving the staff he does not really want to hear anything you have to say and just defends the staff. A child was just hit at the school and the principal moved him, yes moved him. He had no idea what this child's injuries were and was told not to move him until EMT's arrived and even made the comment he needed to be moved because they needed to get traffic flowing. Who says something like that when a child has just been hit by a car? When the EMT's arrived and they learned the principal moved the child one of the EMT's went off on the principal and he had every right to do so. If the staff had been watching the child like they should this would not have happened . If they are not disciplined and the principal is not fired something is seriously wrong with this town.
