Glen Oaks Elementary School

GO is an exemplary school and I’m shocked to see other reviews that state otherwise, especially in regards to the leadership. Having come from another school in McKinney but in Prosper ISD I was floored by how much more supportive, inclusive, challenging and engaged GO was in comparison. Frankly, we didn’t know what were missing. Let’s be real, this is elementary school. Not a time for kids to be worried about “getting A’s” but a time for learning how to learn, how to be kind, how to be a leader in an environment that values the kids worth as a person above their scores. Which, they do receive very concrete scores outside of the 1-4 system. The parents and students are given the child’s MAP scores to show how they are performing in relation to their grade at school, grade at state level and at national level. One of my kids tracks her progress using this model so she can set goals for the next quarter. Way more informative than a letter grade. I’ve known many people who have moved houses just to go to this school. The parents are involved, the PTA is award-winning, majority of the teachers are excellent and I would go to the mats for this principal.

The Leader in Me program destroyed what was once a decent school. The program teaches dependence, not leadership. It's everywhere. It is in the announcements, in teacher emails, in pep rallys, the basis for their award system, etc. The school does not give grades... they use the Rubric's system which results in almost all kids getting 3's all the time. These 3's are subjectively given to students based on teacher's opinions and ideas about how much they might know on a subject. Glen Oaks eliminated the academic honor roll and replaced it with The Leader in Me go-getter obedience award. The school is more focused on their social-emotional programs than on learning and knowledge and accountability. Terrible school if you want your kids to be successful in the real world one day.

Leadership is OK but they really need to take a step toward stopping bullying. My children and I have seen students bullied at school and on field trips. Principal has told me that at Glen Oaks we don't have a problem with bullying but in reality they do!

Wonderful school all around. Great leadership and happy teachers.
