Great schools is wrong. The school was on the lower side, but there has been a tremendous amount of development in this area and the school is now a B level school.

Posted by a parent on 10/31/2024I have two children attending Waltrip with very different personalities and interests. They are both thriving and feel supported by their teachers. I love the staff and administration and feel my kids are in a safe environment.
Posted by a parent on 10/31/2024In my personal experience teachers will make sure you are passing but with your personal permission, what i mean is that if you aren’t trying they won’t try either, they’ll give you the minimum if they know you don’t care about your grades like they do. I feel like some teachers don’t care about you
Posted by a student on 9/29/2024Since Waltrip has gotten a new principal, the dynamic of the school has changed in a positive way (students are getting to class in a timely manner and not congregating in the hallways and bathrooms). Both students and staff are kind and respectful.

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageToday was a blessing, enjoying Grandparents Day with my grandson. However, HISD was unbelievably disappointing. I graduated from an HISD school in 1993, and back then the support system was remarkable, parents were highly involved academically as well as in extracurricular activities.What I witnessed today at Durham Elementary was nothing like that. Grandparents were not reassured, nor respectfully acknowledged, and being left to sit outside in the heat for lunch was truly disheartening , especially considering that some grandparents are older and should have been accommodated with more care. They definitely need a better Principal as a replacement asap! Students do HISD worksheets while sitting on the floor during so called Montessori time. Do not recommend as a magnet school anymore. 8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI don't like Helms elementary school, my child went there for one school year. All they do is speak Spanish. It's supposed to be dual language. They mostly speak Spanish, my child is black, she never wanted to go to school. She said the kids didn't play with her. What really upset me was, they never did any Black History programs, but they did everything the Hispanic people celebrated. I have nothing against Hispanic people or their heritage. They just need to include other races heritage too. Please speak English and Spanish, this is America and English I out language. It's okay to do both equally.
