The school staff is amazing. They work very well with the students and parents. They keep good communication with parents and are always so helpful.

This past year my son lost a half of a year of math instruction because they had a substitute teaching math. They were just going to let my son fail math. I would email the "teacher" about interventions and get no help. I found out the "teacher" was letting the students play games in class and basically do whatever. Finally, they moved a teacher over at Christmas to teach math and my son is passing now. He lost a half a year of instruction! I know he's not the only one! This isn't the only issue. Bullying and favoritism is huge problem at this school. I have reported my son being bullied several times. Once with the principal actually accusing my son of being the bully. One of my son's teachers actually said at parent teacher conference she hoped he would be productive one day. My son came home everyday this year feeling this teacher was targeting him. He has never had an issue with his grades. He has always been an A and B student. In this teachers class, he has been making low grades. It is so disheartening to see the impact these things make upon a child. Stay involved and active if your child goes here. If your child is on special services, make sure they are following the IEP or 504 accommodations. You have to stay on these people. Watch out for your child.

My daughter goes to Plato. Between her coming home crying because a teacher’s aid bullies her and the “popular” kids calling her names it’s a horrible school. The teachers do nothing, even had a teacher make an “example” out of her in front of the whole class. Instead of apologizing for her behavior she waited till everyone left to apologize to my daughter. If you’re not in the “click” you are treated like garbage. I would strongly suggest keeping your kids away from Plato if you can help it.

The atmosphere at Woodrow Wilson buzzes with the enthusiasm of staff and students alike. Each day begins with a morning assembly led by Principal Lisha Elroy. The respect the students have for her is nearly tangible. She emits both warmth and authoritativeness. The school definitely has some challenges in terms of both the physical make-up of the buildings (built in 1967 during the Open Classrooms concept that has since been abandoned for the most part) and the demographic make-up of the students (80% of students are eligible for free/reduced lunch) but the dedication of the teaching staff, the leadership of Principal Elroy, and the caring community of Duncan reaching into the schools through programs like Beautiful Day are beginning to make a huge difference and I anticipate this trend will only continue.
