Our experience was not good. The communication about events, tests and any issues is essentially non existent. We did not feel welcome as a family and our child certainly did not feel welcomed by the other students.

Of the three non-elementary schools, AHS impresses me the most. The main building is all new and is really nice. There are still a few older buildings (Ag, Music, Cafeteria) that need to be updated. Most teachers are okay, but not many that really standout and only a few that shouldn't be teaching. Several sports to choose from and a handful of clubs. I haven't noticed major problems with violence or anything like that during school hours but there are still some kids that drag things down. If your kids are in the Pre-AP, they will be fine. The Music program is awesome. Art drops off a bit here at this level due to lack of variety in classes. The school is scheduled to go to IPads in the next couple years. Traffic is a pain as with all schools in Altus. Things have seems to improve year to year here over the last five years, but it's a slow process. I don't like the somewhat forced class selection base on grade and the counseling needs to prep for college falls a bit short, it's DIY for best results.

This school does not prepare kids for college at all. A majority of the teachers here do not want to be there, granted there were some good ones that actually tried to push me academically. I was a Air Force transplant from Texas, the administration initially wanted to put me back a grade (I believe because they thought the Texas schools were worse than Oklahoma's) but within a month the good teachers were telling the administration to move me up a grade, which I should have done. The school itself is old, it made me sick due to the amount of mold in the building and I was never sick before going to this school. Now they did just build a new building, but the old one is still in use as far as I know. I will say that aside from the bad teachers my principal was a good one and from what I have heard the counselors and new principals are just as good still. If the school had harder classes that prepared kids that want to go to college I would have given this school 4 stars, but the old building and lack of motivated teachers hurts this school.

I have a son who is a freshman at AHS. I am very pleased with the teachers and administrators. When my son was being bullied, the teachers and admin were very much involved in making sure the problem was immediately corrected. I am delaying my move from the Altus area so my son can continue this great school. Great job, AHS Bulldogs!!
