Read what parents are saying about Ottawa Hills High School
OHHS excels in preparing students academically by focusing solely on their grades and testing scores, leading to the school's excellent testing grades and graduation rates. However, students often feel emotionally neglected, and are frequently assigned meaningless busy work. OHHS fails to teach students critical thinking skills, instead relying on constant stream of tedious assignments to artificially boost grades and teach the bare minimum necessary for high test grades. As a result, students feel disconnected from the material being taught to them; They are academically proficient only by technicality, and are never encouraged to engage and develop their understanding of the material.

“Ottawa Hell,” not where you want your kid to be.This district cares only about its reputation and public perception. Not the student as a person. There are a few good teachers within the district who truly care about the kids. There are also several teachers that are full of themselves and feel they are far superior to everyone else including their colleagues (one in particular comes to mind). The district breeds entitled graduates who truly have no idea how it is in the real world, because they have been handed the best of everything. As one reviewer stated, many of the students seek counseling because of the anxiety and/or bullying that comes with attending this school. Although, the taxes are some of the highest in the state, many parents elect to send their children to a private high school, because they fear for their child’s mental health if they were to continue at OHHS. YES, the environment is that toxic. Wished we never moved here. It was the biggest mistake of our lives.

While I attended Ottawa Hills schools myself, the experience of children currently enrolled there is saddening. Bullying is rampant; children are routinely teased, physically threatened, and ridiculed by other students and even teaching staff. The school will go out of it's way to avoid providing state mandated resources to children with disabilities, to the point where some parents must institute legal action to bring the school around. Children who are threatened based on their race or religion will be expected to stay in the same classes with their tormentors so as not to inconvenience the bullies. The school culture seems to be based on bullying, which will make sense if you ever have occasion to meet the superintendent- who was inexplicably hired after being terminated from another local school district. The primary focus of the administration is to protect the school's reputation, and above all else the almighty test scores. If your children happen to be girls, do not expect them to enjoy the same privileges as boys; high school girls teams may only practice when the boys are not using the gym or other facilities. If your religion does not happen to be the same as the rest of the school (primarily Muslim and non-practicing Protestant), your children will certainly hear about it on a daily basis. After living in Ottawa Hills for over 30 years, I can share a few observations: 1) Despite paying the highest property taxes in the area, many families pay to send their kids to private schools rather than Ottawa Hills 2) A shockingly large percentage of Ottawa Hills students are in therapy 3) Children collapsing in the school due to anxiety and stress is so common the nurse sometimes doesn't even call parents. 3) Children routinely return from school crying.

Absolutely horrifying and mentally draining. They taught me how NOT to be smart, brave, and critically engaged.

I would rate this School 5/5. Why? Because of its teachers and classroom environment. Yes, the district may be secluded from the rest of the world, but that doesn't mean the school is full of rich and snobby white ignorant kids who frowns upon the more economically challenged students. The schools are privileged to have parents who care and help their children succeed as much as possible. We also have a number of wonderful staff members who goes beyond what they are required to do and be a guide to the students. It's like a one giant family here at OH. You don't always get that kind of feeling at a BIG or even a average sized school. As for the students, they are the most genuine and pleasant kids I will ever meet. The attitudes and positivity are simply radiant. There is not a day go by with at least a smile from everyone's lips.
