Posted by a parent on 2/7/2023It's been a wonderful experience for my son. This is the second son I have gone had gone through Roxboro middle school! They have gained tremendous self agency, intrinsic motivation and an appreciation for students who are different from them but bring many assets to the table. I'm grateful to the incredibly hard-working staff of Roxbury middle school. I highly recommend the school. As a professor in the medical school, I have seen many students come through without appreciating the diversity of the world around them, Roxboro offers an opportunity for all students to learn how to engage in the 21st Century experience (including Wagner's Skills). I have nothing but the highest regard for the staff and faculty at the school. gina weisblat
Posted by a community member on 8/2/2016My eighth grade daughter has gone here for all three years and has had a great experience. The technology in the classroom, including the iPads, leads to new, unexpected learning, just like any other new tool, and present challenges. The teachers have the ability to monitor each student's online activity in real-time and correct behavior if necessary. The racial and socio-economic mix at the school, we feel, is a benefit, not a problem, and makes my children much more open-minded and aware. The flight of upper-middle class children to private schools is frustrating and skews test scores and classroom make-up, but happens in most similar schools. The gifted program teachers and extra-curricular activities, especially music, are amazing. Cleveland Heights also has the challenge of a very transient population, with a high change rate of students entering and leaving the school due to parents moving into and out of the school district. The community just passed a school bond issue to renovate all of the middle schools and the high school over the next five years which will help a lot.
Posted by a parent on 12/16/2013Mr McNichols the principal is really dedicated, effective and responsive. The IB program is allowing the students to all work at their highest potential. Our high achieving daughter is doing very well, (23 out of 25 ACT in 8th grade), orchestra/band instruction & performance is outstanding. Lots of extras like honors classes, Chinese, sports, clubs and so on. This is in no way an inner city school. The demographics are imbalanced bc of all the parents who put their kids in private school when there are "too many black kids". Don't let those test scores be the only criteria!
Posted by a parent on 2/14/2013One really wonders if there is any learning going on here at all. The kids were given Ipads and play games all day long instead of learning.

He is now in kindergarten and now that the district is fully remote because of Covid-19; Sunbeam has made a valiant effort to keep kids engaged and to keep parents in the know about valuable resources. I am still in contact with his pre-k teachers. We've been happy with all aspects of the school - academics, extra curricular opportunities, and the way the teachers and administration handled the unique situation presented by the pandemic. Our oldest child has gone on to private high school and was well-prepared for it by her time at COS.What sets it apart for me is the sense of community. Older students really look out for the little ones and befriend them. Other school parents know my children by name and ask about them long after they've graduated from the school. The school parents are highly involved and active in supporting the school with their time and resources.In addition to strong academics, my kids have benefitted from many of the extra curricular activities the school offers... sports, scouting, Power of the Pen, Lego Robotics, Yearbook, Student Council, Drama, Band/instrument lessons, Coding classes, Student newspaper, etc. As a working parent, I appreciated the on-site afterschool program where my kids could have a snack, do their homework, and play outside.Parent Review1y ago - Urban Oak School
