I am a parent and my son recently graduated after having moved to this district in the 9th grade. At the top end, the students are amazing. My son had a 4.2 average and finished about 45th in his class. 20 students at Sycamore in 2019 had perfect scores on the ACT and 33 had one below perfect. My son had a high ACT score and received an 80% merit scholarship at college with an average ACT of 28. Echoing what another reviewer has said, he has told me that the quality of the students in his AP classes (22 credit hours for college) was substantially higher than where he is currently going to school. His 4 years in HS went by very quickly with no problems. Very happy with Sycamore. Many good things and no problems.

My experience at the school was ok. At the most academically rigorous levels, Sycamore is superior to every other school in the area by a wide margin. No one has better students to start with and no one has better students coming out.

To be honest, I don’t think I could have gone to a school that prepared me better for college academically. Many of my teachers were phenomenal, and I was able to learn in spite of those who weren’t. The biggest advantage at a school like sycamore is the student body. You are surrounded by students who have grown up going to museums, discussing academic and current issues at home, interacting with intelligent and educated parents, and who come to school with a deeper understanding and willingness to learn than you will encounter anywhere else. I was honestly shocked at how far ahead of everyone else I was as I went through college, and I have heard the same from many people I attended school with. On the other hand, there are some truly awful teachers, and unless you are intelligent enough to see through their inability and learn the subject anyway (which many were able to do because of the nature of the student body), you don’t stand a chance. The profound ignorance of about half the teaching staff is legendary. Also, the social structure of sycamore is very unfavorable to anyone who doesn’t fit in or find their proper place very early on. Students can be very cruel and manipulative, and there is no attempt to change their attitude or behavior. Still, if you keep your head down, ignore the terrible teachers, listen to the good ones, remind yourself that the social terrorism is only temporary, and work hard, you will obtain just about the best education you could ever ask for, and you will be more prepared for university coursework than almost any of your peers.

They say that they want to help your child succeed but when it comes time to show it they could care less, unless you are the family that has alot of money. I have been in contact with one of the counselors at the high school to try to get my son help. We came up with a game plan on how to get him back on track and with my sons willingness all we had to do was meet to discuss the conditions. When we went into the meeting it was all negative things about how he doesnt seem to care so they were not going to help. Even tho my son repeately told them he wanted to get back on track and get back in school. He has been is in outside counceling for a few months and has been doing great. But when they rejected him and were not willing to help, like they promise to do, the disappointment on his face was heart breaking. Hebhas been trying really hard and they just knocked him back down. I will never send any of ny children to Sycamore. Now we are stuck with no options but to home school because we live in their district.
