John F Hughes Elementary School

My son has been in this school since Kindergarten, which he is just wrapping up 4th grade. I think this school has been wonderful. The school grounds have been upgraded over the last few years. I truly feel they make sure the kids are engaged and progressing. My wife and I have loved every teacher my son has worked with. Utica City schools are always talked down compared to the other school districts around. I know my younger son will be starting at this school soon, I have no worries about sending him because I know it is a good school.

Science and social studies was not taught at all in the 4th grade. No official art instruction. Children trace their hands or free draw. During recess children are not allowed to run or play. They are made to sit, and yelled at or punished if they make noise. Punishment includes " walking the halls" during recess, where children are forced to march through the hall for extended periods of time. The school is in disarray. The halls and floors are filthy! The food is disgusting. The staff are rude to children and families. Children are verbally and emotionally abused. The teacher told her students they need to do better on state tests or she will get fired. My child came home crying. She states other children we're crying too. Homework barely gets looked at, and is never corrected.

The staff needs work no PATIENTS At ALL....They Have A Very Bad Way Of Saying Things..
