Read what parents are saying about Harry S Truman High SchoolThis school allowed my son to be bullied for years. The bully would continously attack my child, openly and would verbally threaten to end his life and still the school gave no consequences to that student and did the bare minimum to help my child feel safe. This school is very unorganized and the principal made promises to my child that she couldn't keep like seating accomodations to help my child feel safe and away from the bully. They have not shown they care for my child nor his mental health. Everyone acknowledges that my child isn't the issue, the bully openly does it and ultimately nothing is done.
Posted by a parent on 6/14/2023A lot of people comparing about the school, but you get as much out of it as you decide to take. It is rare for a public school to have so many programs, not to mention an award-winning culinary and media program (other programs are theatre, different types of art, photography, band, JORTC, law, graphic design, engineering, computers). They have multiple AP classes you can take if you have the grades for it, and it is in partnership with CUNY so you can take up to 15 college credits for free starting from your junior year. There are different levels of classes, including general, honors, a more advanced honors class, AP, and college. Most teachers are willing to help if you come to them for help and are serious about your work. They also give Saturday SAT prep class for free to students and give us Baron's books for the regents, SAT, and AP tests to keep. There are also lots of opportunities to get tutoring and if your failing, they try to catch students up by having night school and Saturday school for them. There are lots of sports, clubs, and gym classes to chose from, which can be done in one of the basketball/ volleyball gyms, swimming pool, room, dance room, aerobics room, or cycling room, most gym classes rotate what room their in though expect. Like I said before, people complain, but if you don't go try to do something, you won't get to benefit from the school. Mind you, there are thousands of students in this school and it was doing so well that it was decided that it wouldn't be broken down to multiple schools, which happened to some of the larger public schools. I am also impressed that they were able to keep track of all 2k+ of us and organize schedules effieciently.
Posted by a parent on 4/30/2021I’m currently a junior finishing up the year and I’m about to be a senior. The school is not in the best area but, the staff is alright but, let’s get to the nitty gritty. Programs- Truman HS offer a vast majority of different programs such as Air Force JROTC (which I am currently a part of) Media, Culinary, Engineering, Robotics, Business, etc; the Air Force JROTC Program is the best program in there because, it helps you grow and mature and teaches/instills leadership, responsibility, trust, care, etiquette, time management and more. Teachers- It depends on the teachers you have. If they are the “I don’t care what you do or say” type of teachers, then the ball is totally in your court, play your cards right however, if you have teachers such as my AFJROTC instructors Major Luis Then and Master Sergeant Leon Messina who are there to guide you and push you in the right direction and for me personally, made sure I was always completing classwork even in other classes, I was being a good leader and helping out not only my fellow cadets but, the community as well, the sky’s the limit. I feel like every student going into Truman HS should give the Air Force JROTC program a shot even if you don’t want to join the military and, there is no military obligation either, that decision is yours.Staff- The principal Ms. Alfano along with her many assistants principals are the nicest people you could ever meet. They are always friendly and helpful and they care about both the parents and the students.Truman HS isn’t a bad high school, can it be better? Of course it can but, it depends on who you (if a student is reading this or your child (if a parent is reading this) are/is surrounded by. If you associate yourself with the wrong crowd, then, there’s not really anyone to blame. Think for yourself and make your own plans. Peer pressure is real, don’t give into it. Be yourself and succeed. Take advantage of all of Truman’s opportunities.

Posted by a community member on 6/18/2018Just look at the statistics. This school is far below average in every single area. The statistics are printed on this website. This is a school that performs horribly. If you hate your children, then send them to HST

3/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis was one of the worst schools my children have attended. I had to remove my children due to many issues with staff not taking accountability for their own actions. My family had a bad experience and my children have awful memories of this school & many of the staff as well. This school is not bad because of the children it is substandard because of many of the staff that we have encountered that are shady and very unethical.Parent Review6mo ago - Ps 153 Helen Keller

They provide a nurturing, loving and safe environment on a daily basis. They provide many opportunities for family engagement and they are very professional. I highly recommend this school.Parent Review1mo ago - Academy of Learning
