You pay for "great" schools. This is a good public school. It is diverse, socio-economically, ethnically, etc. It offers its students plenty of opportunity to excel in academics, sports and the arts. Every school has issues and this one is no exception, however, it is clear to me that my child is receiving a quality education in all of her advanced classes. Her regents class, meh. Gates offers dual credit courses with area colleges as well as outstanding summer opportunities at colleges to keep learning going year-round. Counseling is solid. Athletics has bright spots. Overall, we're pleased and we paid for her education in the elementary and middle years but for our tax dollar, we getting a terrific deal.Posted by a community member on 2/3/2017
It's an okay school, but it's a prison!!! For example, in the winter, if you arrive at school after 8:20, you must stand outside in the cold and sign in from a window! Also, everytime something "bad" happens they get much stricter, which does nothing but cause students to become more restless.Posted by a student on 11/19/2014
I love the school. There are fights, but they are mostly verbal. I think some drama is to be expected though, when you put 1000 teengers in a building together for 7 hours. We have a lot of great sports teams and a ton of extra curriculars. Students can choose to take a lot of different AP, dual credit, and honors classes and there are many electives that cater to a wide variety of life and career interests. Most of the teachers I've had are great, and they expect their students to work hard. If you aren't willing to put in the necessary time and effort, they are not afraid to fail you, which is how it should be since that's how the adult world worksPosted by a student on 7/9/2013
At Gates-Chili, children with behavioral problems are most often punished for having them. The staff and administrators are unwilling to work with students and develop anything outside of a 504. In other words, they do the bare minimum required by law. I've seen incidences at GCHS of staff blaming the victim (student) for being bullied. I've also seen incidences of staff bullying students. The "higher-ups" do nothing to help the students, but put a lot of effort into defending the teachers -- except for the teacher who was caught having sex with a 16 year-old Gates-Chili student. They actually fired him. (Which I'm sure saved more than a few jobs.) It's a very sad state of affairs when the teachers and administrators are more interested in their benefits (and retirement accounts) than they are in the children. The community itself is wonderful, but if you have high-schoolers, send them out of the district or home-school them. (The home-schooling program could use improvement, such as allowing home-schoolers to participate in after-school academic clubs and sports programs, and providing online courses.) Overall, it's a nice place to live, terrible public school system.Posted by a parent on 6/4/2013
I am currently attending Gates Chili High School and I think that it is an amazing school to be attending. Although my school has a bad rep. because of a couple students, the school is improving and getting much better. Their are a variety of classes for each individual to take depending on their likes and dislikes. The teachers are also very dedicated, most teachers are willing to stay later in the night to help the students. The school does have drama and a few fights, just as any school would. At Gates Chili High School, the teachers allow you to explore and help you strive to be your bestPosted by a student on 2/21/2011

3/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating Average1. Issues are swept under the rug. 2. After principal Palermo left, the school is out of control. The current principal & vice principal walks around all day with a walkie talkie like they are working. Or, they aren't in the office to meet with parents. 3. The red (bad), yellow (so-so), and green (great) daily behavior process is a waste of time. Just call or email the parents from time with concerns about behavior. It's common sense. 4. Teachers don't answer calls or voicemails. 5. When problems arise between students in the classroom, most teachers send the children to another class without notifying parents. 6. The school lunch is not up to par. The lunchroom staff have to step their game up; I know you have rodents and other issues, I saw the reports online. This school is very small and old. Clara Barton # 2 needs a makeover inside and out.Hire staff that wants to teach and teach well. Create an inviting environment for parents. In my opinion, the school needs to close down.Parent Review6y ago

1/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy child is in kindergarten and attends this school. My daughter reading skills has improved so much since Pre-K and also her math skills. I was worry at first when I found out the other students didn't even know how to add or substract. I thought she would have to wait until the others caught up, but her teacher just challenged her a little more than the others. I really love that her teacher looks at what level they are and base what work he gives them off of it. Homework everyday and he is always available if I have a question. I am hoping my son will be in his class next year.Parent Review7y ago

1/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWhen my oldest daughter attened from Fall of 1993 to 1999, the teachers got her from being a difficult student (she had ADD) to being a good student. However, now, with my 11 year old in 5th grade there, things have changed a bit. When I tried to enlist the school's help with my daughter's attendance issues, I got as far as a few rounds of phone tag with the school psychologist and finally decided my time would be better spent trying to address the issue on my own. Also, how can they give my daughter "Honor Roll" and "High Honor Roll" status, then turn around and say she is not meeting the stanards for ELA and needs summer school? This seems to be a problem with atleast a few of the RCSD schools.Parent Review11y ago
