We moved to NYC at the end of COVID; I was looking for school options and relying heavily on reviews from this and other forums, which was really tough. We've been at Anna Silver for 3 school years now, commuting from Brooklyn, and I'm glad that we made this choice. In our experience with the school, and specifically the Mandarin Dual Language program:- The key staff - Principal, Parent coordinator, and school safety officers know and greet the kids by name every morning. - The principal and teachers are all outside at dismissal after school, and have been incredibly willing to chat when I have had questions or concerns. When I'm not at dismissal (and kids go to after school), teachers and staff have all been very responsive over email.- Within the Mandarin Dual Language program, the class sizes have been small (all below 20!) allowing for good teacher attention, and tight bonds to form amongst the classes. In my oldest daughter's cohort, all but 2 students and ALL OF the non-native speakers went on to Mandarin Dual Language middle school programs, which I think says a lot for the interest in the language and love of learning instilled. - There is a wide range of activities and programs brought into the school for arts and dance exposure. In my school search, I often heard variations of "it's not a good school, the test scores aren't great." It is worth calling out that the school has many students who are both recent immigrants and learning English. All parent communications are in English, Spanish and Mandarin. We've personally loved the diversity of the school, and the care that is shown to learning about everyone's culture and language.

The assistant principal and principal are just a big joke. Very rude women. Get people that are professional and empathetic.

Great school and I mean teachers, principal everyone!!!They go above and beyond to assure the student feels at home. Academically they work so hard with the students to assure they progress. The principal brings so many great programs to the school to make sure the students recieve art, music, dance, reading intervention and more. She knows every students name. And she has a great support system in the school. I can go on and on. My child went to this school and is now in middle school as an high honor student he was well prepared by his teachers at ps 20 to succeed.

We have two kids at PS20 - 3rd grade and pre-K. Our 3rd grader has been at the school since pre-K. Both are in the Mandarin Dual Language program. We live in Brooklyn and chose PS20 on the Lower East Side because of its approach to learning, its dual-language program, and, most importantly, because of how caring and engaged the teachers, staff, and administration is. The school's focus on helping students become global citizens who contribute to their communities is woven throughout everything the kids do. PS20 values and celebrates the incredibly diverse student body, and encourages the leadership of students. Students are supported through the curriculum, the arts, music, technology, science, and physical education specialties, and have the opportunity to engage in dance programs, after-school language enrichment programs, and athletics (in addition to the general after-school programs). Students are encouraged to take leadership with the Student Council, Green Team, and other student-led efforts. Families and students are supported with reading intervention programs, mental health services, housing services, healthcare and wellness, and a food pantry with fresh produce and laundry facilities on-site at the school. The school has a vibrant Parent Teacher Association and an engaged School Leadership Team where parents are involved and contribute to the direction and priorities of the school. We've had a wonderful experience with PS20. We feel our kids are thriving socially and academically. The teachers are incredibly special - they are kind and truly get to know the students, and are easy to talk with about how to support kids in their academic and social needs. The Principal and administration are extraordinary - they manage to be efficient, flexible, inclusive, and decisive so that the school moves forward and/or responds quickly to upcoming issues while including and consulting parents and teachers in these decisions. The Principal values the trust and engagement of the entire community, including the students. The school is constantly evolving - creating a hydroponic garden, working with the Green Team (students, teachers, and administration) to make the school environmentally responsible - and has close relationships with the Lower East Side community.
