The school has a very rigorous vetting process for its incoming 6th graders, who are then placed into an intensive program, taking Regents classes at twice the pace because of double periods, receiving additional help at Saturday Academy and taking classes in the summer. Most students enter high school with all of their Regents requirements fulfilled. This all sounds really good on paper. The first problem is that the quality of the passing grades is often really low and Regents is a poor metric for the quality of student knowledge. For example, to pass a math Regents, a student can know how to do 10/24 multiple choice questions, guess the rest and ignore all free response questions. The second problem is that the school has no electives, so once students enter high school, they all end up taking AP classes. The AP program at the school is really strong, but many students can't handle 5 to 7 APs every year. Since there are no alternatives, students who fail an AP class are often programmed for the same class next year and end up failing it again. The third problem is that because of overcrowding students often can't be scheduled well. For example, some seniors end up taking 3 or 4 gym classes because they weren't programmed for gym classes earlier. Students' schedules are also changed a lot, some students have their programs changed well into October. There is a culture of working hard at the school. Both students and teachers put in extra hours. Many teachers and students are willing to stay after school and come in on Saturdays and Winter and Spring breaks. If programming at the school was better, I feel like the outcomes would be significantly higher. As it stands now, the school has 1/10 student progress, at least according to GreatSchools. If you want to enroll your child in this school, you will need to be an extremely proactive parent and reach out to the Principal, Guidance Counselor and individual teachers as necessary.

My experience at this school would be a 3/10, it has been the more uncomfortable and conflicting experience of my life.

I have attended Medgar since sixth grade and I am currently a tenth grader. In middle school, I was given the opportunity to take classes that high schoolers normally take. For example, In the sixth grade, I was given the opportunity to study world history. In the seventh grade, I continued my study of global history and at the end of the school year I took my regents exam. In addition to this, I was given the opportunity to take Regents Living Environment and my Algebra 1 regents. In the eight grade, I was able to take my physics regents, US History Regents, English regents and Algebra 2 Regents. Essentially by the time, I graduated middle school I had been given exposure to challenging high school material and gained scores that could count towards my high school diploma. Besides academics, the school also offered art, dance and computer science classes to make me engaged in school. A very important question that many parents have before they enroll their students in this school is what exactly is the point of taking high school classes in middle school. I believe that exposure is key. Being exposed to this material at a young age allows you to build up sharper academic skills and gives students the opportunity to take AP classes and classes at Medgar Evers College during high school. The school's AP program is very rich and ap classes are offered in the Humanities, science, math and english. So far I have taken several AP classes such AP US History, AP Chemistry and AP Seminar which have allowed me to explore subjects in greater depth than just the standard regents curriculum. They have made me a stronger writer, critical thinker and better at managing my time. The school also allows high schoolers to earn an associates degree in biology at the college and take college english, math, science and humanities classes with actual college students. This once again gives students an opportunity to retake any regents exams and practice skills that will needed on their SAT and ACT since many of they will be able to take College Algebra and Trigonometry, Pre Calculus, etc.

My daughter just graduated from this school. The trachers do have some opportunities but then again all school do. The educational part is epic they care and want to turn the kids into scholars. Hats off the Dr M. Wilshire he knows every child by name and that says a whole lot. No school is.perfect and kids do nned to be held acxoutable for their actions as so be so quick to pass judgement on the teachers bc some of these students act like adults. The school and its faculty have the focus and drive to make the kids succeed. I am happy with the results. Medgar Evers Rock!

The teachers talk to the students with disrespect and when the students challenge what they said it's a problem. It's supposed to be a uniform school and I've seen ALOT of students out of uniform. A scientific graphing calculator($150.00) was stolen from a student when they were going to the bathroom and when they returned, the calculator was gone from their desk. The student told the teacher and her guidance counselor and she was told " oh well we can't do anything about that".
