Posted by a parent on 5/28/2023It was OK but the teachers use fear as a way to dicipline children and punish children when they don't know what truly happen
Posted by a parent on 9/13/2017Forest Street was "my school." I was the sixth grade teacher there during the 1970-71 school year, That was the most challenging, most satisfying, and very best of my 40 years of teaching. As with all schools in poorer neighborhoods, we still need to make immense strides in adjusting learning environments and expectations to the learners. That can be be said of any school population, but economic conditions are probably the most powerful impact of any on learning success. My biggest challenge was trying to work with a principal who was out of his element, very "old school," and actually afraid of the parents. By Christmas, he was taking sick leave for the remainder of the school year and finally took a position elsewhere. I hope that was good for the great people of the Forest Street neighborhood. The fondest memories of my teaching remain with those good people of Forest Street from the 1970-71 6th grade.
Posted by a teacher on 2/5/2014I can't say enough about this school and the staff. My son went there for 3 years, all of which he was constantly bullied and even jumped by 5 kids on the way home from school a few times. I had to watch at all times for signs of depression. It was overwhelming. They did not nothing but expel HIM from school for making something "unallowed" out of paper. Really? I'm glad we are moving to a better school district.
Posted by a parent on 8/22/2013As a former student, and valedictorian of Forest Street School, i believe the school has done a wonderful job at allowing students to increase their prior knowledge, but the school lacks the experience to help struggling students to arrive at the required level. I just hope one day, the school will grow and improve... untill then, goodluck.

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis school is a disgrace! They don’t take bullying serious at all! My child started in January after being transferred from moving and almost immediately was bullied by a popular student who ended up turning nearly the entire 7th grade against my daughter. The principal NEVER responded to my emails about this matter UNTIL I went above his head! The boy that bullied my daughter was able to still stay in the same class as my daughter up until the very last day of school. Aside from that the school is disgusting especially the bathrooms my daughter took pics to show me and as far as academics my daughter came there as an honor roll student and left as one.Parent Review8mo ago - Lincoln Avenue Elementary School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy daughter has learned an incredible amount during her time at Marshall. In kindergarten, her reading skills improved significantly and she's getting a great math foundation. She loves the way play has been incorporated into the curriculum. The teachers seem to really care about the students and work hard to make sure they are getting what they need. The specialists: art, library, music and PE seem to be very good as well.Other Review7y ago - Solomon Schechter Day Elementary School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis review is a post script to my review on this site from March 21, 2013. My 2 YO son has since joined the school in the nursery classroom. Our daughter completed SOCDS' K program at 5, and after being there for one semester was able to read, write, count by 5s, 10s, and 100s. She learned the solar system, time-telling, money, etc. A portion of the K curriculum SOCDS teaches covers 1st and 2nd grade learning not taught until later in the public school system. SOCDS has a rigorous curriculum for little people, but allows the individual child to excel at their own pace. They're very committed to teaching kids academics on a schedule and also life skills in what I call a "Montessori-light" environment - the classrooms are not structured as tightly as a traditional Maria Montessori room. Children in preschool with my son seem happy and engaged, which is so important, especially when they are small. The school has a homey atmosphere, since most classes are held in a large house. SOCDS has extended day options and a summer camp. Overall, South Orange Country Day is a sweet, well-run small school truly devoted to kids, their minds, and their curiosity/creativity.Parent Review9y ago - St John Grammar School
