Read what parents are saying about Carrboro High SchoolFantastic, caring teachers and staff. Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools tend to be extremely competitive, and this high school is no exception.
Posted by a parent on 6/22/2022More concerned with being PC than education. Lacks quality leadership
Posted by a parent on 5/12/2021Less than optimal. As a transfer student, I was quite disappointed with the student body and and rigor/strength of teaching. There was a significant over-inflation of the egos of both faculty and students alike, in terms of both the academics and athletics of the school. While generous resources were allotted and students received more individual attention, the negative culture of the school detracted heavily from the school experience. Though this school may be a positive example of North Carolina schools, it leaves a lot to be desired in terms of diversity, actual college preparation, and character building. In one instance, when trying to skip a level for a language class I was already qualified for, I was told it would "be unfair to groups of kids who had been historically not given the same opportunities as others" implying that, due to my race, it was not fair for me to be put in a class that was academically a better fit simply because, apparently, the school had not done its job to accommodate other students at some point. Pretty crazy.
Posted by a student on 5/7/2020This school is amazing in many ways and fosters an environment of learning and openmindedness unlike I have seen anywhere else in my life. Unlike the other, technically better performing, high schools in the area Carrboro benefits from being significantly newer and having the physical benefits of the better and newer space, as well as the school itself, is much smaller (physically but more importantly in the number of students) which, combined with the hardworking teachers, have prevented the competitive atmosphere from forming that exists at the two other high schools in the area.

6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWe are incredibly happy with the teachers my two kids have. The teachers are attentive and address any issues my children bring up. I read a few comments below which mention bullying and the lack of dealing with that. On two occasions my kids, who are in separate classrooms, were bullied and the teacher talked to my child, the child that did the bullying, and notified me of what happened. The issue was resolved to my satisfaction. We love our teachers and the new principal.Parent Review6y ago - Frank P Graham Elementary School

4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWe have had a very positive experience due to the incredibly intelligent and compassionate teachers we have had. The school is very diverse and due to learning in English and Spanish I don't believe testing and ratings on this site work as well in this model of a school.Parent Review4y ago - Unc Hospital School

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis school has a lot of problems which the principal conveniently does not address. She prefers to skirt around parents who ask for help, whether it be for services concerning learning, bullying, classroom issues, etc. Don't expect for any problems to get resolved at McDougle. The administration take the approach of them vs. parents, and will never try to work things out the proper way, and the way the kids deserve. Somethings very wrong with this picture.Parent Review9y ago - Mary Scroggs Elementary School

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageGreat customer service...your told exactly what you would want to hear while you're in the building, but don't believe everything your told while your there will be what will happen in the classroom moving forward. Teachers have little time to communicate with parents. They have large class sizes and share assistant teachers between rooms, lunch, etc which doesn't make a 15:1 ratio during class room instruction as reported. It's closer to 25:1. There are many different special needs within a classroom of 25:1. English being a child's second language is not uncommon in this school, many different reading levels, math levels, etc., which are a challenge for a teacher and whether they have support to have such a diverse classroom is questionable. The school's PTA struggles to get parents involved. The school has a mix of very strong, experienced teachers vs. new, unexperienced teachers. You can only pray that your child gets one of the better ones, as it is not consistent from year to year.Parent Review9y ago - Northside Elementary School

4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageFour words for parents of children with special needs. Advocate For Your Child because no one will. At the same time, the school is vibrant and historically meaningful. We felt the school was decent, and not all teachers were concerned. Never my experience as a parent is of my thoughts. Every child must thrive in a supportive environment with teachers who understand the importance of engaging parents in the child's learning. Not just at the IEP meeting, where a parent is informed of the child's progress. Whatever happens to weekly progress reports? I am disappointed because I didn't see passion as the leading force but mediocrity in my child's classroom. If the parent (I) was not taken seriously, I don't think my child's experience was.Parent Review10mo ago
