My children have totally blossomed at Betty Wheeler CJA (formerly known as Kennard CJA). We transferred from another school and have been blown away. Many teachers have been working there for more than 5-10 years. There is a dedicated staff, great PTO, and great principal. There's many related arts
Posted by a parent on 1/26/2025Kennard has served us well. Any complaint would be the lack of understanding regarding student behavior. Kids are impulsive. Writing up a student 25+ times in a school year clearly does nothing to correct behavior. A little compassion would have gone a long way.

Most of the teachers are excellent but the overall organization of school activities is lackluster. For being an advanced curriculum school, far more money and effort is spent on remedial students than on advanced ones. The

If you are choosing between the two, it is worth it to put them both down on your list for the lottery but, hands down, Kennard should be the first choice. The related arts offerings left a lot to be desired - art class was mostly coloring sheets, PE class was just tag and sometimes they "watched a yoga video on YouTube" according to my kids, music class was non-existent. I felt like my children's academic needs weren't being met and they did A TON of screen time during school. A lot of teacher turn over and inexperienced teachers.We stayed for two years and eventually transferred my children to a different school. 8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageAs a parent of multiple SLPS students in two different schools, I can say that Mason seems to be a good school. The first school my Mason student attended and my other student still does, definitely seemed to be better, but I can't fully say as we're in a pandemic and cannot fully engage as we could before. My student LOVES her teacher and her peers, and is definitely learning a lot, which is fantastic. I do have to say that the current principle Stacey Franklin, has been nothing but compleltely rude in the few interactions that I have had with her. Which is beyond anything I've ever experienced with any SLPS staff, as with the years that I've had my students in the public schools, it's been nothing but great. It's a shame to have someone like this, who is supposed to be the leader of these future adults. I do think that hopefully the rest of the staff can silence someone who truly seems to be miserable in her own life to make sure they know what a good person is supposed to be in life. 3/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI have had 2 kids that score beyond grade level. My child loves learning new things and is a leader. He is aware he makes a chose everyday to be great. This school the teachers and principle has failed him. They will not provide individual assistance for your child if they are above and communication is very poor. There is only one reason to chose this school and it's for Mrs. Butler kindergarten class.
