Read what parents are saying about Daniel F. Mahoney Middle SchoolI love Hahoney ! My 12 year old just transferred to Mahoney from a much larger middle school in RI . The teachers are so supportive , and everybody that I've been in contact with has been amazing ! I'm so happy my child is attending this school , I can't imagine the transition being any easier for myself or my child .

Posted by a community member on 12/4/2012I have 2 children attending Mahoney this year, and I am very disappointed in the school. I feel my kids are not receiving a good education for a few reasons - first, thanks to 'no child left behind', the curriculum seems dumbed down - my eighth grader is completely bored because she is not being allowed to do harder work (reason: it would make the other kids feel 'inferior'), and my 12 year old - who needs pushing - is not being challenged. Second, there are major disciplinary problem with students, who disrupt classes and sabotage the learning process for those who want to learn. My daughter told me today that one teacher, tired of the din, now just sits at his desk and ignores the chaos. NOT acceptable! Third, the school seems more interested in their music program than the academics - when the music/band classes have stricter standard, rules, and mandatory attendance for concerts than the English, Math, Science, and Social Studies classes, that's a problem. I've tried to be an involved parent - something the school claims to want - but my comments and complaints have been ignored. With one child now off to high school, we are seeking private middle school for our other.
Posted by a parent on 5/16/2012This is a decent middle school. The teachers, for the most part, are great. You can tell they really care about giving us an education. A lot of the kids there like to goof off in the middle of class. The school itself is fairly old, and I think it needs a lot of stuff done. Overall, the teachers are great, and the students are okay.
Posted by a community member on 3/2/2012I hate this school because the teachers are horible and the students are out of control a good population of the students at Mahoney do not try there best get bad grades and cause drama or problems and i think some of the special ed staff that help kids with special needs even tought the rule is to work with ALL students most of them just focause on the special needs students! Lunch is gross the put out moldey grapes !the lunch ladies do not ware hair nets and when a student brings up a problum with the princable they do nothing all of the drama is spread by girls mostly and kids with disabilties get bullied and piicked on for the way the look and act and the things they do i just think that this school neeeds better teachers and better wealchair exsesabilty this school has not been fixed sence the High school the atatorum belcaney seats still say SPHS on the back so as you can see this school in my opinion is nothing but bad trash

1/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageBoth of my children went to Reiche. I don't usually post reviews online, but after seeing the horrible rating on this site, I felt compelled. The teachers are incredible: hardworking, intelligent, creative, and caring. They are so good at building community in an amazingly diverse school for Maine. The international potluck will rock your tastebuds and the talent show will have you weepy at least once. I am a teacher in one of the rich suburban schools nearby and am so glad my kids went to Reiche!Parent Review4mo ago - James Otis Kaler Elementary School

2/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThank goodness we found a home in Scarborough school system. I cannot even begin to describe the horrors I went though with not only the previous principal but multiple uneducated teachers at this school. They allow bullying with just a slap on the wrist not only from children but my daughters teacher (won’t name names but the second grade teacher) who continuously harassed and targeted my day he her, thankfully I was able to switch her teacher that year and she was able to have a good rest of the school year. My daughter was considered above her level for math and reading and now entering Scarborough we are finding that is she is JUST where she needs to be and Kaler really dumbs things down for the non-English speaking children unfortunately, so if you want your children to get the most out of their education I would consider another school system. This is also coming from a mom who has attended all South Portland schools growing up and let’s just say I am so blessed and happy to have my daughter attending Wentworth where she can really grow her mind.Parent Review1y ago - Greater Portland Christian School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageWent to GPCS from K-12 grade and could not be more thankful for my parents choice to send me to this school. So grateful to have had a Christian education and have had the opportunities GPCS granted me. Some of my closest lifelong friends I had the privilege of growing up with at this school. Teachers care. They get paid less than if they were to work at public school but almost everyone of them goes above and beyond and will stay after school to help any student if they need it on there own time. Education here is so affordable comparatively and in my opinion the best you can find anywhere in Maine.Student Review4y ago - Cathedral School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageOur three kids have had an exceptional 1.5 years thus far at Waynflete and we have excellent things to say about the teaching staff, administration, and culture that has been built at the school. Every teacher is intensely committed and focused on seeing students not only grow from an academic perspective, but also as a person - developing the skills necessary to navigate the evolving world around us. Each teacher our kids have had thus far are true educators who are committed to seeing their students succeed AND working with parents and the administration to make sure there is a true team supporting the development of the student. As a result of this, Waynflete has developed a culture that balances both excellence and psychological safety, while focusing on the whole child. There are very few schools in Maine that have the resources and passion to pull this off, and Waynflete is certainly in the top of that group.Parent Review1y ago
