We have concerns about the student environment and communication practices at Heritage Christian School. In our experience, bullying, teasing, social exclusion, and conflicts between students have not always been addressed quickly, consistently, or effectively enough.Students who are perceived as different or who do not fit within the more popular social groups may have a particularly difficult experience. Some children may feel excluded, ignored, or shunned, while the adult response to these situations does not always appear clear or meaningful. We have also been concerned by situations in which student issues seemed to be handled internally without timely parent involvement. There were occasions when it became clear after the school day that our child had been significantly upset, despite no prior communication from the school. Parents should not be left to discover serious social or emotional concerns only after their child comes home distressed. We also felt that the school culture can give the impression that certain families are treated as more important than others. Seeing the children of one family prominently featured together on the school’s public-facing materials raised concerns for us about representation and fairness. Whether intentional or not, this can make other students and families feel overlooked or less valued. What makes this especially disappointing is that this is a Christian school. Families reasonably expect a Christian school to actively model compassion, humility, respect, inclusion, accountability, and care for children who are struggling. In our experience, the handling of bullying, exclusion, parent communication, and the overall culture has not consistently reflected those expectations.Based on our experience, parents considering Heritage Christian School should think very carefully, ask detailed questions about bullying prevention, student inclusion, parent-notification procedures, and how all families are represented and treated within the school community. Do not assume that a Christian label alone guarantees a culture of kindness, meaningful intervention, or transparent communication with parents.
