Posted by a community member on 9/8/2023some of the teachers do an excellent job and really care, others, so so. administration is terrible, they will not work with parents or students. if you are a football fan, then this will work for you, that is where all the attention ( and money) goes. school is too large, but as another viewer wrote, this will never change because that could/would affect the strength of the football team. there is a lot of bullying, with little to no repercussions, except for the victim. for the size of the school and the kind of community ( derby is a great town to live in), the high school only has a 90% graduation rate, this is very alarming and the school nor the school board seem to care any or do anything about those numbers
Posted by a parent on 9/30/2022From the time I enrolled my child in the Derby school district in 6th grade, neither him and I were never accepted. Once those teachers put a “label” on a child, it sticks with him/her throughout the rest of their years in the Derby school district.
Posted by a parent on 4/30/2018Concerning the band program, I have seen no instances of favoritism in my four years of marching band and Wind Ensemble. For example, my friend didn't make marching band her freshman year and remained in concert band the entire year, but by her junior year she was sitting first chair in Wind Ensemble, the best band in the school. DeVault, the band director, provides equal opportunities that every band student is able to utilize. Further, the marching band audition process is necessary to the well-being of the band. The marching band is comprised of 170 students, and through a rigorous rehearsal schedule we are able to produce a quality half-time show every year. In fact, in the 2013 season we received straight Superior ratings at the K-State festival and we were named Grand Champions of the Neewollah Marching Festival in Independence. The band program has taught me a lot about myself, given me the opportunity to make new friends, and it has by far been the best experience I have had at this school since my freshman year. Please do not get discouraged by some of the accusations in these reviews; I definitely would recommend joining the band to anyone.
Posted by a student on 1/12/2014I had three children go to this school from 9th to 12th. Two have graduated so far. I feel that for the most part it has been a good experience. I agree with most that has been said good on here, but also agree with the one negative. That is favoritism, especially in band-choir-and sports. All three of my children have talents that they pursued, but students with a certain name do tend to land in parts regardless of talent. One student could not block for nothing (well known family), but never got pulled from the game---ever. One in Madrigals (my son was in this too) who absolutely could not sing or dance. This is pretty typical but sad. Other than that...great school.

4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageIf your child has any sort of disability this is not the school to go to. They are horrible to work with. The front office staff comes across as rude and very uninviting. I have never been so disappointed in a school!Parent Review10y ago - Pleasantview Elementary School

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageSwaney is a great school!! It still has a little of that "Old Derby" feel, the way things used to be, in all the good ways! I went to Swaney in the 70s and a lot of its small-town charm remains. They still tape the class rosters and "who got which teacher" on the glass a few days before school . I remember going up there and reading the results by our car's headlights. On "Meet the Teacher" night, the principal greeted all of us warmly as we entered the building. This Saturday, there is a "Rock the Block" party just as a back to school event! There will be bounce houses, a DJ, games, food trucks, and a special Glow in Dark event in the gym!! Teachers, parents, and students are down-to-earth, and just look at those test scores! I am so happy my kids go here!Other Review7y ago - Tanglewood Elementary School

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageA child affected by ADHD or alone or with co-occurring conditions (learning difficulties, anxiety, depression, autism spectrum) is more likely to be suspended from this school than a child without those conditions. Sending one of kids home is only reliving the teacher and not focusing on him. Students sent home is allowing him to think he can leave whenever things get rough for him and not learning moment for him. Sending him home is not helping. A teacher keeps taking away a his recess as punishment OFTEN. First, kids with ADHD are the kids who need recess the most. Second, taking recess away as punishment is not effective. Taking away a child’s recess as punishment is detrimental to students. Play and recess have value. No, I wouldn't recommend this school.Parent Review11mo ago - St Mary Parish Catholic School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThe staff and faculty at this school truly care and get to know the families that attend. This school raises its students in the Catholic faith and promotes a good learning environment. Many students that attend go on to be very successful, as the school encourages the pursuit of further knowledge.Other Review7y ago
