Read what parents are saying about Garfield Elementary School4-10 for the lack of communication and help from my 2nd grade teacher even after asking repetitively
Posted by a parent on 11/19/2017The principal of Garfield, Mr. Harries, is a GREAT and involved administrator. District and state budget protocols tend to un-ameliorate many urban school populations, seemingly by a war of financial attrition. Nevertheless, Mr. Harries still finds ways to help teachers teach , through compassionate behavior management by finding a way to handle onsite students, who display offsite problems, by way of insightful strategies, within the building. He seems to only suspend the most needed cases. This principal reflects the image of what the school s student population needs to see, especially re those middle school age boys. I would hope that the district will one day have this brilliant principal involved with that niche of student. The Dist 89 community urgently needs Mr. Harries as a principal, especially for upper grade elementary. Finally, too many parents are NOT stepping up to be involved with their own kid s success. Put your opinions in writing. Come out to city/school board meetings. Register to, & VOTE! Non parents need to get involved too. The education level of a community, and your neighbor s kids, GREATLY affects the potential economy of its citizens.
Posted by a community member on 2/26/2014I attended garfield from K-8th grade and i must say that it is a wondeful school it is full of well detemined teachers that sacrifice to make sure the education is number 1 for the students but you cant always blame the teacher , sometimes its also the student. If the student is not willing to learn the that can be effective. but from my own experience i must say i that the speed process takes to long some of the thing i was supposed to lean there i dint learn til i got into highschool so i think that they should push much harder on education and speed if they're really striving for success

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageGreat but the only thing i wish about schools now put the activities back so that the kids can stay kids more assembly's, celebrate holidays in these assembly's ,let the kuds pass out goodies when its required like birthdays,Christmas, Thanksgiving,Valentine's Day and Halloween, Black History, Cinco de Mayo and St Patrick's Day in Roosevelt School not going to other schools in the 89th district. Make it fun as well as learning. Thank youParent Review5y ago - Washington Dual Language Academy

4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI want to be clear that I am assessing the new Washington Dual Language Academy that started this school year 2014-2015. I have to admit I was extremely skeptical to enroll my daughters in this school given the District's reputation, but given the focus on dual language acquisition and competency I felt it was a calculated risk worth taking. Also, given this was a new program I believed that if there were enough committed parents and teachers all working toward the same goal, this school could be different. I'm pleased to say that from my experience this year it was MUCH better than I expected. Of course, the enrollment experience could have been better planned and executed but I didn't want that to impact negatively on my experience with the school as they were not at fault for the District's disorganization. We transferred in from Oak Park River Forest school district known for strong academic performances year after year. After experiencing OPRF (as a minority) I would strongly recommend this program for non-Spanish speaking students as well as already bilingual students. My daughters came into the program knowing very little Spanish given we don't speak it at all at home and it was not a strong emphasis (although offered as a course) in OPRF, but at Washing Dual Language they were in the perfect environment to learn it and have done well in their acquisition as well as literacy in both English and Spanish (both on grade level and above for each language). They also did not suffer in their development of the required core subject materials, it was just a bonus to also learn it in Spanish. I'm hopeful that the upcoming years will improve further as long as the community can see the value in the bilingualism of students and parents engage with the school in their individual child's journey. Let's continue to raise the standard for our community school and their overall performance.Other Review8y ago - St Paul Lutheran School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageSt. Paul has an excellent teaching staff. It has provided a good Christian education to the community for many years. It is a safe, stable environment for our children. Tuition has not increased for 2013-14 so that it can be affordable. The teachers are dedicated to the students, providing the best education possible. I highly recommend St. Paul Lutheran School!Other Review11y ago - H Mcnelty School Of First Baptist
