Read what parents are saying about Mitchell Elementary SchoolPros: friendly and small school community, nice family events throughout the year, committed teachers, great parent community Cons: declining quality in past 5-10 years, admin (one) generally resistant to parent feedbackThere's a very inconsistent student experience from teacher to teacher. My kids experienced multiple teachers at the school. No longer a strong vision for taking the school to the next level. Unfortunately not all admins treat parents with respect or as partners in education. There are also some fairly inequitable fundraising practices. Kind people at the school, but learning quality has declined in recent years. Parents don't receive much support when approaching admin with problems (at least one admin is fairly arrogant). At one time, the school ensured solid teaching for all learners. No longer the case.
Posted by a community member on 12/26/2023My son went to this school. It is very small but has a big community. They did various activities for the students, such as movie nights, bike days, or book fairs. During sixth grade in math, they become introduced to algebra and geometry by working with their peers and creating teamwork. The teachers here are very helpful when it comes to learning and they care about the students passing. If they see someone having a hard time working alone, they may leave to work in a small group in another room or hallway. However, I was worried about my son because he got bullied many times in the fourth and fifth grade during recess and I wonder why the staff or teacher never noticed that he was feeling down in class. He became very socially anxious during his school years because he felt left out and had trouble opening up at Mitchell. They don't care enough about these bullying issues. That is the main reason why I would downvote teachers and the administration. Overall this school is average and I would not rate it as the best of the best.
Posted by a parent on 11/27/2022We have attended this schools for five years so far. The school has a extreme race issue, being that every black individual they come across come from poverty or what some have said " south side individuals". Teacher will only interact with some parent through email or not at all, to safe face amongst peers. We spend a extreme amount of time outside of the school to make up for what the school lacks. The school does not have a functioning library nor art programs.
Posted by a parent on 2/14/2022My son just started Mitchell. The teachers and staff have been very supportive.
Posted by a parent on 9/24/2020Like at every school, there were ups and downs but, overall I love it. We treat each other like a family here.

1/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageOur family loves Dett! In the past 4 years they have moved from a level 3 to level 2 school! The staff truly cares about the students. Teachers have made the transition to remote learning smooth and accessible.Parent Review3y ago - Chopin Elementary School

3/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis school is horrible it’s full of drama. The teachers are inadequate for teaching. They don’t listen to the parents they mostly listen to respond instead of listening to understand and problem solve the parent teacher communication is 0 all the school does is beg for $ and u never see any school improvements. In the summer there are no screens in the first floor my child was bitten up by so many bugs! Drugs are on this school grounds . Do not send your children here I swear you’ll regret it.Parent Review3mo ago - St Helen School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI love my school and have been in it since preschool. It has taught me how to have a strong character ad taught me how to be a leader. It also gives you many opportunities to be your own star and be independent. One example the campfire story competitions and the Do The Write Thing (DTWT is where you write about violence happening in Chicago through a poem, speech, or novel) . I won top 10 in DTWT. The teachers also support me and help me in time of need. The teachers may be fun to hang out with but they also prepare us for the future by teaching us correctly. We score in the 90th percentile for the ACT. That is awesome! I love my school and will miss it when I graduate to high school.Student Review4y ago - St Nicholas Cathedral

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI use to go to this school. (As a Student) (2008-2011) (Under the last principle). I must admit that it was fun to go to this school. I liked going to church every Friday and playing with friends.. I dislike the colors that they did infront of the school now .. The Lunch there wasnt the best ( I dont know about now) .. Recess wasnt fun because we didnt have a playground, all we did was run around on the streets.. The P.A teacher wasn't the best. My Parents had to pay A LOT of money each month for my education and I didnt learn anything from the teachers.. (I again there might be different teachers now)..Other Review9y ago - St. Malachy School
