Read what parents are saying about Playmate Kindergarten, Day CareTeacher's treat my daughter like a family. i'm very happy to be she is in this school
Posted by a parent on 8/15/2012Playmate Kindegarten and Day Care is a very nurturing environment for children. My daughter felt part of a family of caring teachers and peers. The teacher-student ratio is wonderful and the teachers are readily accessible for helpful discussions about your child. This allowed the teachers to tailor a rich learning experience for my daughter. After visiting a number of schools in the Makiki area, I chose Playmate for Pre-K because I thought it would best support my daughter's development, and my daughter and I were very happy with the school. I strongly recommend this school to other parents.
Posted by a parent on 6/4/2012If superficial appearances are all that matter to you, don't bother with this aging, messy school. But if, like us (university academics), you actually value your child's education, I think you can do no better than Playmate Pre-School. We chose this school for our daughter's Pre-K experience because of the focus on academics (not just play), the teacher's openness to work with us (which we didn't find anywhere else), and - perhaps most importantly - the amazing teacher-child ratio. There are about 10 toddlers in a separate classroom (who appear to be having a fun, caring, educational experience), but our 4-year-old had only 3 classmates! So much one-on-one time with the teacher meant that her learning progressed at a mind-boggling pace. She also had free play time with her peers, and a chance to help with the younger kids, building confidence. Next year, she'll start Kindergarten at Punahou, but it was with much regret that she said goodbye to her teacher, Ms. Maureen, to whom she had become very attached.
Posted by a parent on 6/2/2012Playmate Kindergarten, Day Care Center and Grade School has been around since 1948. It is a small, private school in Makiki which has given a solid academic foundation and a caring, loving environment to my four children who attended her in the mid 70's to the 90's. The teachers were/are well qualified, attentive, loving ,compassionate, and nuturing, They work hard with the students regardless of scholastic abilities. All of my children were accepted into the best private schools after Playmate .I would highly recommend this quaint, little school to anyone.
Posted by a parent on 10/25/2011Who/what we are growing up is a direct reflection of how we were brought up and trained. I have been familiar with Playmate School for many years and have seen the outstanding products of their educational programs. Without doubt, this is one of the very best "old time" schools in Hawaii dating back to 1950. Friendly, homey, and compassionate the teachers are well trained, certified and qualified. Stronly recommend if you care about laying a solid educational foundation for your child.

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThey have a procedure where they push parents to put their child through a pyschoeducational evaluation and pay for it out of pocket. First, they give the parents a list of evaluators that they "trust", and then the teacher tells those "trusted" evaluators in detail "what is wrong with the child" (they actually provide the evaluators with the standard diagnostic criteria for a learning disorder they think the child has), and then the evaluator runs some tests to confirm the teacher's opinions. That way, the teacher practically elicits a diagnosis from the evaluators and the parents have to pay for it. So many 7-8 year-olds at that school were attached lifelong labels like that. That way the teachers can totally deny responsibility when the child has problems and instead attribute any negative outcome to the diagnosis. It does not matter if the child is teased or bullied by other kids, needs more attention and support from the teachers, is scared of the teachers, or is just having a rough semester because he or she just moved or changed schools. They say whatever problem the child is having has nothing to do with them and there is nothing they can do about it, since the child has a diagnosis already.I urge parents to be careful: Do not let your child go through a psychoeducational evaluation only based on one teacher's recommendation unless you see him or her consistently struggling at home as well. Also, make sure the child does not struggle academically due to some other problem, such as anxiety and depression caused by teasing and bullying at school (either by peers or by teachers). If you decide to proceed with the evaluation, make sure you know everything the teacher tells the evaluator about your child. If the teacher keeps you in the dark or is telling the evaluator things about your child that are not true, then do not proceed with the evaluation.Parent Review2y ago - Hanahauoli School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageIf your child fits neatly into a box (very compliant, never challenges what the authorities tell them is the answer, has no learning differences, needs no accommodations) then this is a great place for them. The school prides itself on being experts in elementary education, and if you and your child don't love everything they do and (at least pretend to) thrive in this "magical" environment, they will make you feel like something is wrong with your child and often find a way to push you out. They talk about being so welcoming and inclusive to everyone, but what they mean is that they welcome a very specific type of child and family and are not really interested in making room for those that they feel don't fit neatly into their "perfect image". It's a bit heartbreaking to see how they have made some families feel like they don't belong.Parent Review1y ago - Maryknoll School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThe school has many issues. They force their religion on the students. In my experience students feel the teachers give work and never teach them. Teachers are too strict. Teachers expect students to teach themselves.Other Review6mo ago - Maryknoll School
