Read what parents are saying about Decatur High SchoolThis entire district is imploding on itself due to intense pressure from the community to enable students' self-destructive, out of control behavior. None of the parents want any structure for their kids, so the kids all just run wild. Bullying, fighting, drug use, sex, violence towards teachers, threats, and intimidation - it all gets rewarded by administration with chips or cookies and preferred activities like computer games and skipping class. Decatur schools are a swirling vortex of volatile hormonal madness. Admin are powerless to do anything, so they just sweep everything under the rug and pretend it's okay. Teachers and administrators who attempt to hold students to any expectations get attacked and persecuted. The few students in each class who want to learn get labeled and targeted by bullies. Bullies and their uneducated loud mouthed parents run the schools and the only education anyone is receiving is "how to use manipulation to get out of anything." We sold our house and moved to get out and I'm so glad we did.
Posted by a parent on 12/21/2022As a parent I love the school. My son graduated from Decatur high school 2019 and my daughter is scheduled to graduate 2022 in both have flourished in the school. Teachers are amazing, small school feel and great community to live in.
Posted by a parent on 8/18/2021My kids were college ready not only because of the IB program but mainly because of the counseling department and the excellent teachers
Posted by a parent on 8/18/2021So far our experience has been excellent. I myself went to a parochial school because the public schools in my hometown were not up to par. My wife was a public school kid that attended a great PS. Based on both of our experiences which were excellent I put DHS right up there with them. In some areas such as diversity and embracing a broad world view I put DHS ahead of my own experience.
Posted by a parent on 10/17/2019So far, so good. I tell my kids life is what you make it and incumbent upon your attitude, your perceptions, confidence and your goals. This school seems to be a good fit for my kids. The both love it. But who they are comes from their home environment and solid belief system.

1/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThe despite the ways that they can improve, there were proud days, and not so proud days. They do try most of the time to make All children feel wanted, proud and to help them to grow in their learning skills. As a whole this school was good, and their teachers and staff do try. There are many schools that do not.Other Review4y ago - Winnona Park Elementary School

6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy daughter has a learning disability, and although I wish it could have been addressed with an iep sooner, she has received services and is now thriving. With 2 children who have made their way through this school, I can say that a majority of the faculty and staff is top notch.Parent Review5mo ago - Oakhurst Elementary School

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThe school is good if your child is average terms of development and intelligence. If your kid is above neurodivergent in any way, this may not be the place. We're dealing with a highly intelligent child with a processing disorder and having no success in working with the school to make my child's experience a good one.Parent Review1y ago - Fernbank Elementary School

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageAs a parent of two children who are/have attended Fernbank for a combined eight years, I can confidently say that it is the best public elementary school in the area. The teachers and staff are incredibly dedicated to their students. They are passionate about teaching and creating a positive and nurturing learning environment. My children have loved all of their teachers, and they have thrived academically and emotionally under their care. In addition to its academic excellence Fernbank is also a very welcoming and inclusive community. The school celebrates diversity and makes all students feel valued and respected. Like any school, as a parent you can be as involved as you want to be! Post-COVID there are lots of ways to be involved, from being a class book reader to going on field trips. The administration and staff are approachable and get to know each child. They also know how to get things done! The test scores have gone up over the last three years, a rarity in Georgia! Go Fernbank!Parent Review6mo ago - Friends School Of Atlanta

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy child and our family did not have a good experience at Friends. We thought being a quaker school that it would be inclusive and that as parents there would be many opportunities to engage and volunteer. We found the parent committees to be cliquish and difficult to participate even in volunteerism that we signed up for. Generally the school is very disorganized when it comes to events and programming making it difficult for working families to have clear expectations that things would start on time, in the location indicated or at all in some instances. Supervision of children is lacking and safety is a concern specifically in transitions and during after school. There are many times when non-teacher adults are supervising the children. Academically, the children who do well are the children who learn easily and are taught at home otherwise, you will not see progress from your children's academic development (at least in the early grades). The high level leadership Head(s) of school have been smart, kind charismatic and caring. Mid level leadership are ill-equipped for their roles and do not have the skills needed to support teachers and foster a professional environment to work effectively with children and families. Due to the school's decades long issue (pre pandemic) with low enrollment and being a tuition driven institution they do not have the resources that other schools at this price point offer to children. They simply do not have much to offer in the creative arts, performing arts or sports. The facilities both inside and outside are in poor condition and generally are not inspiring. Teacher retention is a problem, as well as teacher attendance, throughout the course of the year each class heavily relies on substitute teachers to fill in for chronically absent teachers. This tells me that there is an issue in the health of the school as healthy schools keep teachers for years and years and they show up to work due to their passion for the work and the sense of accountability to their students. It is not unusual to have a teacher leave midway through the year. Friends has trouble retaining children beyond prek & K when other area options open up within the public or private school systems. In the older grades able attract children for whom other area schools did not work out and for them Friends is a refuge. The families that Friends attracts are lovely and the community, if they can retain them are their best assetParent Review2w ago - Decatur 1st United Methodist Preschool & Kindergar

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageOn paper and in theory, the school sounds like a great opportunity especially as the world changes rapidly and children deserve a slower, exploratory pace. However, in practice, the Waldorf School of Atlanta needs stronger and more balanced leadership, checks and balances for accountability, humility and courage when owning imperfections, transparency of expectations for all, and to sum it up: a trauma-informed education environment. While all schools will have inevitable challenges and mismatches, a seemingly progressive private school should be doing better keeping the children’s best interest at heart as it relates to relationship building and repair based on modern interpersonal relational practices, not on antiquated and questionable philosophies from which the school was created.Parent Review1y ago
