Read what parents are saying about Walker Elementary School (Magnet)I'm a parent of a Walker Wildcat, and I volunteer in the school's Media Center, and we love this school. The teachers and staff are involved, and the school is one of First Lady Michelle Obama's Turnaround Arts Schools. The Magnet program offers a wonderful, FREE (because it's public school) performing arts program that my child looks forward to every day. The school is in a poor area, so we don't get much in the way of property taxes, but everyone is dedicated and working toward improvement. Instead of looking at a "1" rating and looking elsewhere, I'd encourage parents to come be part of the solution and help make Walker the best school in Broward County. For what it's worth, we researched other schools nearby, too. One in particular, a top-performing school in the area, also has a lot of rich, privileged students, and boy, the ones in my kid's after school martial arts class sure were entitled little people. Not exactly the peer group we were looking for, despite its high Great Schools rating.

Posted by a parent on 5/24/2016I went to Walker when I was a child and now my two children go there. The school has had its ups and downs, but I am happy to report that with the arrival of the new principal, all things are looking up. The school was cleaned up, teachers who care about the kids are teaching, and there is a big change in the attitudes and behaviors of the kids. I never felt good about my kids going until this year. I hope they keep this principal around because he is doing a great job managing the school.
Posted by a parent on 10/16/2015At first I must admit that I thought "high" of this school & the things I was confident that could be given to my child. The school is in a very rough area and the children within this school are very much not nice. It's sad that this school is consider a magnet school as not all teachers "display" love and affection towards students especially children unique. I will honestly say to not place your child at this school as the bullying, hitting & kicking is real and the environment is very rough. The head Principle is great but not even she can cover up the type of behaviors that go on at this school.
Posted by a parent on 9/24/2014Staff at this school don't even support it.I tried to come out and enjoy the band only to realize me and my daughter plus maybe 2 more parents were the only one's there i did not see 1 teacher so after all i was very dissapointed it was a waste. This is a F- rated school and needs to be closed. This school has failed to produce items in which i paid cash for /class pictures twice, and mother's day cake no wonder they ask for cash only,i don't have a paper trail to show for.But anyways i had to glady withdraw my child from this disgraceful poor establishment, she now attends a A-rated school. Also the front office staff has bad communication skills Miss --------- is awful. When she answer's the phone with phenomenal Walker qoute there's nothing phenomenal about a F-rated school i'm just saying.

3/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageOk so heres the deal I went here for grades 1-5, I'm about to start 7th grade but I was at the top of my class in 6th grade, because of this school and the caring staff I'm one of the smartest people in my grade. I can say so much about this school most of them being good, but there are some flaws. I'll start with the good, My FSA scores were always high {4 on math 5 on reading} I've never once failed an important test, and the staff is amazing for the most part but some do play favorites, I had an amazing teacher for 2nd and 3rd grade {yes the same teacher, no I didnt stay back} she loved us so much and she played a big part in who I am today she even still keeps in touch with me and several of my friends to help us out but its not just her the, its the principals, the conselours, and even the lunch ladies. I even had the opportunity to be on the morning anouncments from grades 3-5 and that also helped me a lot with confidence, speaking, and finding out what I wanted to do with my life. Theres so much more to talk about with this school I made some really amazing friends, and although bullying does happen its rare and we all stand up for each other. The school is located in a dangerous area so there are many code reds and stuff but nothing serious ever rlly happens and you get used to it, also thats not a flaw of the school its a flaw of the NEIGHBORHOOD/AREA the school is in. Also I'm not just smart all of the people I know from here has never failed the FSA snd the lowest final grade theyve gotten was a C or F AT WORST cuz they were bad. Also I cant rlly speak on the special education. Another thing they have pretty good aftercares and in school programs. If you take anything away from this very long review take this its an amazing school and I couldnt have asked God for a better one.Other Review9mo ago - Sunland Park Academy

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI received a child that attends this school, first of all the surrounding area is the hood. Second of all the front service staff acts like they hate their job and they speak to the children as if they are worthless. I went there today and not only did the lady at the front desk NOT check my identification to pick up a child but she did not even get up from the comfort of her desk to tend to children across the room, she simply kept yelling at them. Additionally my research shows this is an F school, yikes!! I knew something wasn't right when the kindergarten teacher told me during a conference that the child is doing well although the child is barely reading and it's the end of the year. Standards here are extremely low, cant wait for the child to attend a different school next year.Other Review8y ago - North Fork Elementary School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThe school has been so good to my daughter! She received speech therapy since PK3 exceeding our expectations, she has made great friends and loves to go to school everyday. It feels like everybody is family, they are very welcoming and the teachers are top notch very communicative and caring. They work on individualizing education for your child's needs to make them thrive academically and socially. It is not easy to get in but if you do you’ll have no regrets ever. It’s a wonderful, safe and intellectually stimulating learning environment in the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale.Parent Review5mo ago
