Pleasantly surprised. Came from montessori prek and worried about transition - he likes it more! I like that there are good class sizes, in class computer labs and better diversity than private. Cons: Neighborhood is a bit rough (police activity) by small city standards and pick up takes at least 30 mins mist days.Posted by a parent on 10/18/2019
Wonderful family atmosphere where children obviously come first!Posted by a parent on 10/14/2019
My Son started 1st Grade as a New Student Transfer this year. Although he misses his old school he has Adjusted to Southside Elementary and Absolutely Loves his Teacher and New School! His Teacher Always Keeps in Contact with us when we have questions or a Concern with his Grades.Posted by a parent on 10/2/2019
Couldn't be happier. Our child is now leaps and bounds ahead of the pack in reading and math skills. Enrolling at Southside was a great decision. This is an A rated school for a reason.Posted by a parent on 1/22/2019
My daughter had wonderful, caring teachers all 3 years she was at SES. We will miss the great teachers and staff as 3rd grade is held at a different school. Neither she nor I felt that the homework was overloading. If you as a parent thinks the work is too much, then don't do it. It's not part of their grade, but is good to get them in the habit of doing it since one day it will be and it is good reinforcement for their lessons each week.Posted by a parent on 7/20/2016

8/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy child was struggling with several subjects. After meeting with teachers about all of my concerns (struggles with homework, spelling and low self esteem, poor grades, among other issues) they had no suggestions or advice. I could see that he could easily have fallen through the cracks. I had him evaluated by a child development specialist and he was diagnosed with dysgraphia as well as ADD. They were very surprised that non of his teachers picked up on any hint of a possible problem. He was so miserable at the end of the year so I agreed to homeschool him, as I have experience working with and teaching children with special needs. We were also disappointed that the students only have P.E. once a week and no Art.Parent Review2y ago

7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI’ve noticed the only people that give this school a 5/5 star are the ones whose children have never been to any other school. This school is definitely behind compared to schools in the Midwest United States. There are no lap tops, nothing for gifted students to do, and the playground is from the 1960’s. I have begged for my gifted student to have extra homework/extra spelling words/extra anything for 2 years, and nothing has happened because he/she is too smart. Unfortunately, my student had sat at a desk for 2 years bored to death or has been student helper/secretary for the teacher/coffee runner for the teacher/etc. If you are coming from out of state look into homeschooling or Fernandina Beach elementary(at least they have art and most children come from parents who have college educations). The teachers and staff at YES have been nice, but when dealing with a gifted student nothing gets done.Parent Review2y ago
