Read what parents are saying about Frances Wakeland Elementary SchoolCould not have been more pleased with Kindergarten here. Fantastic teachers, administrative staff, nurse etc.Wonderful environment for learning and being creative. No complaints at all after one year. Looking forward to moving into the new facility at Johnson K-8!
Posted by a parent on 5/18/2018It is really SAD that someone from the community would post absolutely incorrect information about our wonderful school. We have had some challenges over the past few years because of a change in leadership and county issues. However, we are now a B school! My children are receiving an amazing IB education. They are challenged and love coming to school! Visit ibo.org to learn more about an IB education. It is also the only public elementary school that I know of that teaches Spanish. They are truly better prepared for middle school than their peers at other A rated schools. The TEACHERS ARE AMAZING!!! Also like the parent that posted on February 8, Wakeland is just being considered for relocation not closure based on the condition of the school.
Posted by a community member on 2/9/2016The teachers and parents are completely committed to the students. There is no one I have talked to who can deny the stellar education students at Wakeland receive, even those who have left to attend other public schools in Manatee county. My children love school. Only a great school fosters love of learning! Please check facts before submitting reviews, especially if you are not familiar enough with the school to reflect it honestly. Wakeland has demonstrated extreme success in its standardized testing over the last year, which will be confirmed when the FSA test scores are released this month. The school has never taught only to see success on standardized tests but rather success in academics as a whole. Again, facts are incorrect in other reviews about recent discussions regarding Wakeland. District is not proposing to close the school because of academic performance. The school will not be closed, only relocated due to foundation issues in the building that may potentially be too expensive to repair, but even that has not yet been determined.
Posted by a parent on 2/8/2016Do your research before selecting Frances Wakeland Elementary School.School grades have declined steadily over the past several years. It was rated by the FLDOE as a "D" school in 2014, after being rated a "B" school in 2012. This change in performance coincided with a change in leadership at the school. In recent years, there has been high teacher turnover, especially in the Upper Elementary grades. Because of poor performance on standards-based assessments, and a failure to adequately blend their IBO curriculum with State of Florida learning goals, Manatee County is considering closing the school down permanently.

Wakeland is a school that teaches to the whole child. Teachers go above and beyond to ensure that all students needs are met. There is not only high quality instruction but character building and real world experiences. There is a great sense of community felt as soon as you walk in the doors.

3/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy oldest has been enrolled at Samoset since 2022 when we switched schools. She finished out the remainder of 2nd grade and is currently in 4th grade. My youngest just started kindergarten at Samoset this year. Both my kids have had good experiences so far. There are some fantastic teachers at this school that really love working with kids and making sure they understand the material being taught. After-school tutoring is provided for intermediate grades through 21st Century per request. Tutoring is also offered on Saturdays for intermediate grades to assist with learning components featured on the FAST test. Perfect attendance is recognized and celebrated monthly with prizes, snacks, or a party. They've implemented a new Positive Referral to recognize outstanding behavior in students of all grades. Samoset just had a new front office addition built which makes the school much more secure. The playground is brand-new as well, installed in 2022. Many of the students that go here need additional support, whether it be due to a language barrier, restricted income, behavioral challenges, etc. The school recognizes this and has corresponding staff and teachers to work with these students to help overcome obstacles. Teachers work together closely and are familiar with every student in the grade they teach, not just their own classroom. Fine arts classes are a daily part of the students' schedules and include STEM, Library Skills/Information Literacy, Music, PE, and Art. They also offer clubs like TSA and K-Kids. My oldest was in the Cambridge pre-AICE program last year, and if you have an advanced child who needs to be challenged more in school, I definitely recommend it. Cambridge is more fast-paced and covers current grade level as well as next grade level standards. Expect your student to have lots of homework and classwork if you elect to go this route. It can be overwhelming for students who aren't used to the high workload the program requires. Overall, my kids are happy at Samoset and get fantastic grades, their teachers work hard to ensure everyone is successful, and I believe the school is on the right path to turn things around. Test scores are troubling, but when you take into account that 44% of students at Samoset are English language learners, you understand why standardized test scores alone are not the deciding factor in whether this is a "good" or "bad" school.Parent Review1mo ago - Louise R Johnson K-8 School of International Studies
