The Children's School

As a former student, the education here was good at CAS but the teachers there have favorite students. If one student does something bad they get in trouble but the favorite student does not. The bullying here is outrageous. They will bully you a lot. If your friend is sad or crying you cannot comfort them or else the teacher will loudly scream at you for doing it. The plantation near the playing area is dangerous there are many dangerous plants like poison ivy. The playground is unsafe since they make you play on an old parking lot. There are many dangerous cracks which is immensely angering since children play here. There are outdoor classrooms that they make you use during some tests. It is very bad since you can bugs crawling up your leg during a test which makes it tremendously hard to focus. The "prizes" that you get on your birthday are just dollar store items like little stickers that say CAS on it. This school massively disappointed me

This school has a serious bullying issue that they refuse to address. The administration has been made aware on many occasions that the girls will verbally and emotianally abuse individuals in certain grades, excluding and taunting. The administration talks about things they will do, but never address it.

MIDDLE SCHOOL: Our daughter entered this school as a friendly, athletic seventh grader. The biggest issue we discovered is how extremely small the middle school is. With only about 20 girls in the grade, cliques become rigid and exclusionary, and there is very little meaningful supervision. Instead of recognizing that such a tiny environment requires more support, the school provides almost none.A large portion of the grade consists of children of employees or students on significant aid. The school promotes this as diversity, yet in practice it forms a protected inner circle of long-term families. Students who come from outside towns and pay full tuition are quickly treated as outsiders. Our daughter was excluded and targeted socially simply because she wasn’t part of this insulated group.When boys in the grade became friends with her, that alone triggered hostility. Instead of addressing the behavior, the school ignored it. Even worse, some parents became directly involved — gossiping about students, influencing friendships, and fueling conflict among 12-year-olds. Any school that allows adults to participate in bullying is failing at its most basic responsibility.When we raised concerns, the response was alarming. We were told our only option was to send our daughter to the middle school counselor, who was not only unqualified but was also the parent of students involved in the conflict. The school was essentially recommending that our daughter confide in the mother of the girls contributing to the problem. This is a serious conflict of interest and shows a complete lack of professional standards.Families are paying nearly $55,000 a year to be offered no neutral counselor, no plan for resolving bullying, no accountability, and no alternative support. The school protects its internal circle instead of the students who come from the outside.Fortunately, we live in a neighboring town with excellent public schools — a place where an athletic, outgoing, kind student can actually flourish. For families who don’t have that option, look closely before choosing a private school this small, and make sure it draws from a broader community than concentrated Stamford.

Great place to send elementary-aged children. Unadvisable place to send middle school & up. Horrendous place to work. If you want your child to be coddled into adulthood and enter high school with absolutely no sense of real-world maturity, discipline, responsibility, or respect, this school is perfect for your family. Older students face absolutely no consequences from admin for any disrespectful behavior, nor for LITERAL violence. Their concern for keeping parents happy & money flowing is obviously greater than their concern to keep students safe, which is reason #1 why my kids will no longer be attending this school. Even the educational aspect of this school is clearly low on the priority list - teachers are forced to juggle lesson planning, grading, & teaching with babysitter-like "clubs," coaching, and multi-day chaperoning all at no additional benefit. NCCS is a beautiful school that evidently has a greater focus on early childhood education (which truthfully it seems to do very well.) It's unfortunate that they're teaching beyond a 6th grade level, as the current admin and structure of the upper school is setting up future adults for failure.

Mead has overcommitted and underdelivered with their Nexus program. My child's class had only one neurotypical child. The rest were students with autism and/or ADHD who were not getting the support they needed. There were regular behavior issues that the teachers were not trained to handle and many parents in the Nexus program complained about a lack of adequate support for their children. Some children never got the services they were promised, after parents paid an extra $20K for the program. Teachers are rigid about their teaching methodology, failing to provide basics like visuals and scaffolds for learning. The Mead way is that the child must advocate for what they need, but even when my child advocated, the teachers did the bare minimum to get the child through that assignment and did not change their approach with the child or develop strategies moving forward. Teachers regularly kick out half the class as a classroom management technique. Administration protects their teachers and get very defensive if you point out issues with how behavior is being managed. Students are able to take breaks and not get work done and the teachers won't tell you until the progress report comes out and you realize how behind your child actually is.
