Read what parents are saying about Newington High SchoolGreat School! THANK YOU to the wonderful staffs at NHS for working really hard with my son to ensure he succeeds. I pray the upcoming school year goes as smooth as it can go. It really takes a village to ensure my son succeeds, THANK YOU all!!!
Posted by a parent on 8/10/2017I was a student here and I was pretty happy with the teaching quality after coming from a different location. Definitely helped me get into STEM by giving my a solid background in math.
Posted by a student on 1/18/2017Great School with great teacher involvement I always receive email responses when reaching out to teachers or administrators. The schools goes above and beyond they offer free math help during and after school. The music/chorus dept / teacher is amazing. There is a wide selection of courses and clubs and just this year students can earn college credits for free apparently.
Posted by a parent on 9/6/2016Newington High School, overall, is an extraordinary school. Having experience in other towns in the state, this high school offers many great courses and extracurricular activities I did not see in other towns. Personally, I believe that the majority of the staff are very well prepared and helpful. Most students show effort and determination to succeed. The students in the Newington Public School system, I find, very receptive and welcoming to newcomers. There are a few things that could be worked on, though. The process of filtering into AP classes really needs some improvement, the changing testing program could also use some stability, perhaps some minor superficial improvements throughout the building could also be made, and better trained staff would be nice to have in some parts of athletics. But other than that, I find it very hard to look for other areas to improve upon. Again, a great school overall.
Posted by a student on 4/15/2014During my time at Newington High School I was emotionally bullied by both the students and teachers. Some teachers no longer work at the school and have retired but this behavior was still aloud. I have severe learning disabilities that were discovered IN COLLEGE. While at Newington High i was called lazy, ridiculed for not understanding things in class. Such as algebra and english, even some elective courses were a nightmare. Concert choir for example, should have been called embarrassment 101. I never gave up and kept trying with many tutors and after school help but still I hardly graduated. How a single teacher in this entire school couldn't see my struggle as something wrong and not that I was "dumb and lazy" still blows my mind. When I had to go back to Newington High to request my transcript, I will never forget the look on the guidance counselors face as she said "You are applying to college!?" She always said I would never get in and not to bother applying. I did get in and then I transferred to a much better University in Boston. If I still lived in this town and actually had children they would be sent to private school.

6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageHaving come from Glastonbury Public Schools and being a former public school teacher I felt compelled to share I’ve been impressed with John Paterson Elementary. This school has highly-skilled veteran staff that work well together in each grade band. Class sizes have been 16-18 students- which I find incredible given most districts have maximums at 27 students. I’ve consistently been impressed by each teacher my child has had. I get weekly updates on what they’re working on in class and pictures of their activities. They offer enrichment, as well as targeted interventions, for students to ensure everyone’s needs are met. My child absolutely loves their school and has found good friends. Math and reading instruction are on point. I also love the socioeconomic and ethnic diversity here- it’s such a better representation of the real world and offers an abundance of teachable moments. Students get to learn about all different cultures and make friends with students who speak multiple languages. I’ve also been pleased with the social-emotional curriculum. I understand the “great schools” rating goes off of test scores, but schools are so much more than that. My kid is happy, enjoys learning, is performing above grade level, feels safe, and likes going to school.Parent Review2mo ago - Anna Reynolds School

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageThis is the 1st year my children have attended this school and they love it. There is a good mix of teachers younger and more experienced and I feel that they are all very commited to providing the children with the best possible education that they can. Class size is small and there is a great sense of community and family. I also love the fact that prayer and faith is a part of their every day routine.Parent Review9y ago - Emmanuel Christian Academy

N/AGreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI have had the opportunity to be a part of the improvements that Emmanuel Christian Academy has been doing their facilities in the following areas: lighting, painting, roofing, heating, security, furniture, parking lot, and landscaping. Combine that with teachers who have mastered their subjects and love their students and it is a winning combination.Other Review7y ago
